Anchorage （アンカレッジ）

A summit between the US and Russian presidents is set to take place in Anchorage, Alaska, on 15 August. They are expected to discuss achieving peace and a ceasefire in relation to Russia's invasion. While the US president is keen to succeed, unfortunately, it is highly unlikely, given Russia's extreme reluctance to withdraw from Ukrainian territory. I hope that he can at least persuade the opposing side to agree to a ceasefire, without being misled by Russia’s diplomatic rhetoric.
The meeting site is a memorable place for me, too. When I began working in international business, I landed there twice en route to Europe, as it served as a refuelling stopover. At that time, the terminal used to offer many Japanese foods for Japanese passengers. I used to enjoy Japanese noodles there.
However, travelling via the city was very tough due to the very long flight, such as fourteen hours. The difficulties went on even after I arrived in Europe. As my flights arrived in Europe early in the morning, I had to work on the day I arrived.
Fortunately, things improved soon after. Non-stop flights to European cities, which flew over the Russian airspace, were established. They shortened the flight time by about four hours. They also provided me with comfortable stays in Europe because of their arrival early in the evening. So, I could sleep well on the day of arrival, without working.
However, the Russian invasion forced a change to the route again, which has made the European flights more complex. Nowadays, they take almost the same hours, fourteen to fifteen hours, as they take the polar route flying over Anchorage. Even worse, they are direct flights with no stopovers. Such long flights can be exhausting for passengers.
This situation underscores the urgent need for a ceasefire in Russia’s invasion.

　8月15日、アラスカ州アンカレッジで米露首脳会談が開催されます。ロシアの侵攻に関する和平と停戦の実現について協議される見込みです。米大統領は会談の成功を強く望んでいるものの、ロシアがウクライナ領からの撤退に極めて消極的であることを考えると、残念ながら実現の可能性は低そうです。ロシアの狡猾な外交的レトリックに惑わされることなく、少なくとも相手を説得して停戦に合意させてくれることを期待したいです。
　この会談場所は、ボクにとっても思い出深い場所です。国際ビジネスに携わり始めた頃、ヨーロッパへ向かう途中、給油のため2度この空港に降り立ちました。当時、このターミナルでは日本人乗客向けに多くの日本食が提供されており、ボクも麺類を食べたものです。
　でも、アンカレッジ経由は、14時間にも及ぶ長時間飛行のため、大変でした。ヨーロッパに到着してからも大変でした。到着の時間帯が早朝だったため、到着した日も仕事をしなければならなかったのです。
　幸いなことに、その後すぐに状況は改善しました。ロシア領空を通過するヨーロッパ各都市への直行便が開設されたのです。これにより飛行時間は約4時間短縮されました。また、到着が夕方だったため、ヨーロッパでの滞在も快適でした。到着した日は仕事せずに、ぐっすり眠ることができました。
しかしながら、ロシアの侵攻により、再び航路変更を余儀なくされ、ヨーロッパへのフライトはより複雑になりました。現在では、アンカレッジ上空を通る北極ルートとほぼ同じルートのため、14から15時間もかかります。さらに悪いことに、途中降機なしで直行便で運航されています。こんな長時間のフライトは、乗客にとって大変な負担だと思います。
　この状況からも、ロシアの侵攻停止が緊急であることを浮き彫りにしています。
