What is the hidden wish behind "Nothing has been decided yet"?
"Nothing has been decided yet."
A student who says that.
It is one of the phrases I often hear from high school students during career counseling.
The key point here is to create an empathetic space that does not involve negation.
For that purpose, use active listening and questioning.
If you find it impossible to empathize with the student, make an effort to not negate them.
When you do this, hints will begin to appear within the words the student speaks bit by bit.
By picking up those words and delving further into the student's thoughts, their true feelings will gradually start to flicker into view.
In about 15 minutes, the student themselves will realize what kind of wish they held.
"Nothing has been decided yet"
=> Whether to start a business, or to take over the family business.
That student was harboring worries and anxiety between their current "dream" and that choice.
"Nothing has been decided yet" was a sign that the student themselves was struggling.
