[Canva Glitch] How to fix the issue where Japanese (Kana) input doesn't work in the browser version! For dual monitor setups
Hello, I'm Canva Man.
Today, I headed straight to Costco after my night shift, and I'm writing this article after taking a nap once I got home.
Since I followed a routine completely different from my usual one, I was worried I might get sick, but surprisingly, I had no problems at all.
It is said that environmental changes are the biggest stress for the human body, but conversely, when you can withstand those changes, you gain a little bit of confidence in yourself.
That said, this is just a rare case; normally, I'm a weakling Canva Man who would get sick 99% of the time lol.
Now, this time I'm going to talk about a very niche glitch that occurs when using Canva and how to solve it.
The reason I can confidently call it a "niche glitch" is that when I searched for it on the internet myself, no solutions came up at all.
It might be a problem that depends solely on my personal computer environment.
However, precisely because it is a niche issue, it is not listed in official help or manuals, and I thought there might be other users secretly struggling with the same thing, so I decided to compile it into this article.
Also, on my personal blog, I have left a realistic record of the time when this problem first occurred.
What kind of glitch happened?
The glitch this time is that "pressing the Kana conversion key on the keyboard does not switch from English input to Japanese input".
For example, imagine a situation where you want to type "Arigatou!" (Thank you!) on your design in Japanese. Normally, you would switch to Japanese input mode and type the characters.
However, when this glitch occurs, the operation to switch to Japanese mode is not reflected, and it just keeps typing "arigatou!" in the alphabet.
The tricky part is that it looks like it has switched correctly to "A (Japanese mode)" on the computer display.
Even now, I occasionally encounter this phenomenon, but there is only one reliable workaround that I practice.
Now, I will introduce the concrete solution.
Conclusion: Toggle "Kana conversion" on and off on the sub-monitor side where Canva is not open
My computer environment is a "dual monitor (multi-display)" setup where I use two screens. To conclude, you can resolve this glitch by clicking on the other monitor screen (sub-monitor) where Canva is not displayed and performing the "Kana conversion" toggle operation on that side.
Reason for the conclusion and supplementary information
Details of the glitch and temporary system recognition mismatch
This phenomenon occurs because, even though the language bar at the bottom right of the screen shows "Japanese Input (あ)," the text box within Canva continues to be recognized only as "English Input (A)."
By performing a Kana conversion operation on the sub-monitor side once, the input system's recognition on the PC side is reset, and the correct input mode will be reflected in Canva on the main screen.
Why does this issue occur?
The exact technical cause is unclear, whether it is a browser bug or a temporary focus shift due to OS (Windows or Mac) specifications in a dual-monitor environment. Since no similar cases appear in searches, it is likely not a system error within Canva itself, but rather some form of interference occurring between the dual monitors and the browser, or during the keyboard input system switching process.
Note: This may not resolve the issue in all environments.
This solution is based on the premise of a "dual-monitor environment." Since it is highly likely that this is not due to a Canva server failure or a bug caused by the browser's (Google Chrome, Edge, etc.) cache, this method may not work if similar issues occur in different environments, such as on a laptop with only one monitor.
Also, there is a possibility that the dual-monitor connection itself is the cause. If toggling on the sub-monitor side does not fix it, please try restarting your browser or logging out of Canva.
Summary
I have explained how to deal with the issue in the browser version of Canva where you can only type in English even though it is displayed as being in Japanese mode.
Symptom: Even when trying to convert to Kana, it remains in English input like "arigatou!"
Solution: In a dual-monitor environment, toggle "Kana conversion" on a different screen where Canva is not open.
Note: There is a possibility of system interference specific to dual monitors, so this is not a solution that works for all PC environments.
Troubles that cannot be solved even after searching are very stressful, but I hope this article provides a clue to a solution for those who use Canva in a similar dual-monitor environment and are troubled by this "inability to convert text" phenomenon.
