Campsite Operation Improvement | Providing Manga at the Campsite
(CAMPING NOW provides a 'field-based partner' service that supports everything from on-site field research and improvement idea proposals to flow design, administrative confirmation, and coordination with vendors and manufacturers.)
One option for improving a campsite is to 'provide manga'.
It does not require large capital investment and is one of the measures that is easy to consider when the idea comes to mind.
In this article, I will simply summarize the concept and the points to organize when implementing it.
The purpose of providing manga is to 'kill time'
The purpose of this measure is clear.
To gently fill in idle time.
At a campsite,
・after setting up
・free time before meals
・time at night when you have nothing to do
・time when it is hard to go outside due to rain
—these kinds of times when you do nothingalways occur.
Manga is an easy-to-understand, self-explanatory option for filling that time.
Target users
The target audience is mainly the following groups:
・Solo campers
・Children
・Their companions
While solo campers have a high degree of freedom, they also tend to have time on their hands.
Even with children, it is inevitable that there will be times when they have nothing to do, such as while waiting for parents to prepare or before and after check-in.
Whether or not there is an option to spend time quietly during these moments also affects the atmosphere of the place.
The premise of lending for free
The premise is that the manga is lent for free.
If you charge for it,
・it requires explanation
・the psychological hurdle increases
・it is easily perceived as the manga being the 'selling point'
—these kinds of discrepancies are likely to arise.
As part of the campsite experience, it is naturally placed there.
This distance is just right.
Points to organize for operation
There are a few minimum points to keep in mind when providing manga.
・Place only legitimately purchased volumes
・Do not copy or digitize them
・Do not share e-books
・Do not make manga the main attraction
As long as you keep these points in mind, there are rarely any major operational issues.
While the act of providing manga is simple, when you actually try to do it, it can be surprisingly difficult to judge on your own where the line is between what is acceptable and what is going too far.
Relationship with repeat visits
The effect of manga is not immediate.
・I want to read the next volume
・I'll read the rest when I come back next time
It works as a quiet reason for these thoughts.
It is not a flashy gimmick, but it can be a memorable element.
Implementation requires on-site judgment
Providing manga does not guarantee the same results for every campsite.
In reality, the effectiveness changes based on the following points:
・Where to place them
・Whose path they are on
・What time of day they are used
・What kind of books to provide
These are not things that can be decided at a desk, but are elements that can only be judged after observing the situation on-site.
Therefore, even if the idea of "providing manga" is simple, the results will vary depending on the design.
Summary
・Provide manga for "killing time"
・Lend them for free
・Do not highlight them; treat them as added value
・Design depends on the site
The initiative of providing manga is one improvement plan that can be undertaken with little burden if designed well.
What is important is not whether you do it, but how you provide it.

We can also discuss experience design and organization, such as "How about arranging them this way?" via a web meeting.
・Just 30 minutes
・No preparation required
・No need for a specific consultation
It is perfectly fine if you just want to talk a little to organize your thoughts.
