A Place to Return When You're Lost🌿 Realizing That "The Answer Is in the Field"
"I'm sure this is what it is."
"Maybe this is where they're having trouble."
When you're in a meeting,
before you know it,
don't you find that assumptions
have become facts?
No matter how much you think about it,
you just can't seem to find the answer.
Not knowing what to do,
you just go around in circles in your head.
Before you know it, time has passed,
and your anxiety just keeps growing, doesn't it?😌

🌿 Moving in small ways, and where to direct that first step
Last time,
on days when you feel like you can't move forward,
"Start small"
was the concept I wrote about.
It's not that you move because you've become positive, but rather,
by moving in small ways,
positivity sometimes returns little by little.
That was the story🌿
That was the previous post📖
However, even if you want to start small,
"What should I start with?"
"Where should I head to move forward?"
Sometimes you just get lost.
At times like that,
what I wanted to hold dear was
"The answer is in the field"
—that way of thinking🌿

🌿 In meetings, we tend to talk in "I'm sure" terms
When working in meetings,
"In the field, it must be like this"
"Maybe they are having trouble with this"
"Probably, if we do this, it will work out"
Sometimes,
based on the imagination of the people there,
the conversation moves forward.
Of course,
I think imagining the other person's situation
is very important.
By considering the perspective of those not present,
or predicting what might happen next,
there are things we can prepare for.
However, as the discussion continues,
what started as "this might be the case"
somehow turns into "this must be the case."
And sometimes, we try to find an answer
based on that imagination.
I myself
sometimes think that way too💦

🌿 When you actually go there, your perspective changes
However, when you actually visit the site,
see what is happening there,
and listen to the stories of the people involved,
you may see a different view
than what you imagined in the meeting room.
There are times when people are struggling
more than you thought.
There are also times when people are feeling burdened
in ways we hadn't noticed.
On the other hand,
"You don't need to worry that much"
is something the people on the ground
are handling firmly.
There are times when we realize
we were worrying too much😌
The field
is not just a place to verify
whether the predictions made in meetings were correct.
Unexpected troubles and
small discomforts that haven't been put into words yet.
And,
I think it is also a place where you can encounter
the ingenuity and reliability already being born on the ground🌿

🌿 There are things you cannot understand just by "looking"
Simply going to the field
does not mean you will understand everything.
If you only look at what you want to see,
and return saying,
"As I thought, it was just as I expected,"
you have merely turned your imagination into a conviction.
That is why what is important,
along with actually standing in that place,
is to listen carefully
to the stories of the people working there.
What are they struggling with?
What are they worried about?
Conversely,
what is proceeding without any issues?
What kind of ingenuity are they using?
Instead of bringing the answers with us,
first, we should ask them to tell us what is happening there.
By listening with that attitude,
the "I thought it was like this"
will gradually unravel.
When you return to the field,
speculation decreases, and the facts become visible.
And, the more you touch upon the facts,
the more you may gradually see
what you should do next🌿

🌿 Not to find someone's mistakes
When we talk about looking at the field,
"I must find the problems"
"I must find things to improve"
we might end up thinking that way.
However,
the purpose of going to the field
is not to find someone's mistakes,
or to point out
what they are not doing.
It is to understand what kind of situation
the people there are working in.
What are they feeling, what are they struggling with,
and with what mindset are they working?
To understand that,
I try standing in the same place for a moment.
I try actually listening to what they have to say.
That accumulation of efforts
“They are truly seeing us and paying attention”
might be what leads to that sense of security.😌🌼

🌿 I want to find answers that help everyone look forward
The answers we come up with in a conference room
are not necessarily wrong.
Imagining things,
gathering information,
and discussing them are all important.
However, just doing that
sometimes leaves things feeling not quite right.
Even if it is logically correct, if the people actually doing the work feel anxious
or are not convinced,
it becomes difficult
to walk in the same direction.
That is precisely why,
before deciding on an answer,
I look at the actual field,
and listen to the stories of the people there.
Then,
I understand what they are truly struggling with,
and I realize things I had been worrying about more than necessary.
And then,
we get closer to an answer where everyone can feel secure, convinced,
and walk forward.
I have been feeling that way lately.🌿

🌱 When you are lost, try returning to what is right in front of you
Of course,
going to the field does not necessarily mean you will find the right answer immediately.
Listening to others
can sometimes create new uncertainties.
Depending on the person,
the scenery they see and their way of thinking can also differ.
Even so,
rather than continuing to think based only on imagination,
by touching upon what is actually happening,
the resolution will gradually increase.
Before deciding,
"It must be like this,"
try going to check,
"What is it actually like?"
That small step
can sometimes get a stalled discussion
moving again.
If you are currently
unable to find an answer no matter how much you think,
it might be okay to return
to the reality right in front of you for a moment.
Try seeing it for yourself,
and listening to the stories of the people there.
The facts and voices there
can quietly teach you
your next step.😌
Moving forward might not happen when you keep imagining the correct answer, but rather when you touch the reality in front of you and the voices of the people there.
It may start to move little by little.🌿
