A way of life: Not 'having things taken' by AI, but 'entrusting them to AI'
Recently, when looking at topics related to AI,
there is a phrase I hear often.
“Jobs will be taken by AI”
I think many people feel a sense of unease
every time they hear this phrase.
Will my job be okay?
What should I learn from now on?
It is very natural
to feel that way.
However, when you use AI,
a slightly different feeling also emerges.
That is
closer to 'entrusting' than
'having things taken'
a feeling like that.
Today, I would like to write about that.
Why the word 'taken' carries so much weight
The word 'taken' has
a strong nuance.
・Having something precious stolen
・Having your value disappear
・Becoming unnecessary
That is the image.
That might be why hearing about AI
makes people feel more afraid than necessary.
But when you actually use AI,
you sometimes have a slightly different experience.
For example,
Having it draft text for you
Having it organize your ideas
Having it summarize information
When you ask AI to do these kinds of tasks,
it does not mean the human role disappears.
Rather,
It increases the mental space in your head
It is close to that feeling.
Humans have always 'lived by entrusting things'
When you think about it,
we have long lived while
entrusting tasks to various things.
For example
calculators
washing machines
map apps
search engines
If you tried to do everything on your own,
it would be quite difficult.
But we
'use them because they are convenient'
for that reason,
we naturally leave it to them.
AI might actually be
an existence that is an extension of that.
Things you can leave to AI
What I feel when using AI is
that it becomes easier if you entrust the 'first half of thinking' to it
is what it means.
For example
・Organizing information
・Generating ideas
・Drafting
・Summarizing
・Researching
These tasks
actually consume quite a bit of energy.
But once you entrust them to AI,
the 'starting point of thinking' moves forward a little.
It becomes much easier
than thinking from a blank sheet of paper.
What remains for humans
So, where will
the human role remain?
As you use AI,
you gradually begin to understand.
It is
the act of 'choosing'
that is.
AI is
good at providing
possibilities
and options
for you.
However,
which one to choose,
what to believe,
and which direction to head in
is
a human task.
In other words,
AI is
an entity that lays out the map for us
and humans are
the ones who decide which path to walk
perhaps.
Does using AI mean 'taking the easy way out'?
Regarding the use of AI,
'I feel like I'm cheating'
some people say.
But in reality
using AI
does not mean you think less.
Rather,
the place where you think just changes.
The energy you have used until now for
・Researching
・Organizing
・Summarizing
will shift to
・Judging
・Editing
・Selecting
instead.
This change is
actually quite significant.
What is needed in the AI era is 'stillness' rather than 'speed'
When it comes to AI,
・I must master it quickly
・I must learn new tools
a sense of impatience arises.
But what is truly important
might be something else.
That is
thinking calmly
.
AI makes proposals
quickly and in large quantities.
That is precisely why humans need
the power to choose quietly
will be necessary.
Entrusting things to AI makes life a little easier
What I feel when using AI is that
life becomes a little lighter.
When you try to do everything yourself,
you get tired.
But
if you entrust some parts to it,
a little breathing room is created.
With that breathing room,
thinking,
feeling,
and choosing,
you will be able to spend time on
things like that.
Does AI make humans smaller?
Looking at the evolution of AI,
sometimes it feels like humans are becoming smaller.
But
if you change your perspective a little,
you can see it differently.
AI is
also a tool that expands human capabilities.
as well.
Just as the bicycle
expanded the distance humans could travel,
just as the internet
expanded human knowledge,
AI is
a tool that expands the range of thought.
Perhaps that is the case.
'Entrusting' rather than 'being taken over'
When you look at topics about AI
If you feel a little tired,
please try remembering these words.
'Being taken over by AI'
instead of
'Entrusting to AI'
Just by changing to these words,
the way you see things will change a little.
You don't have to leave everything to it.
But
try entrusting
just a little bit.
If you do that,
I feel like what humans should do
will also become a little clearer.
The AI era
might look like a busy era.
But in reality,
it might be an era to regain
time for humans to think quietly.
Perhaps that is the case.
