On revealing my face with a birthmark under my real name on social media.
Revealing my own face with a birthmark on social media, and under my real name at that, took a lot of courage at first. I was terrified that I would be exposed to terrible slander and abuse. I still vividly remember the moment I set a selfie as my profile picture and made my real name public, feeling nervous deep down. The catalyst was a certain author.
Going back in time, this was during the heyday of Mobage Town and GREE. Everyone was interacting anonymously, dressing up avatars that served as their alter egos. I, too, had my avatar wear various outfits, and I even cheekily had it carry a guitar I couldn't actually play.
This appearance wasn't the real me. I have a birthmark on my face. I felt guilty, as if I were hiding my birthmarked self and deceiving others. I don't think we could use our own photos as profile pictures back then, only avatars, but even if I could have, I didn't want to expose my face—let alone the fact that I had a birthmark—on the internet, and I didn't have the courage to do so either.
Years passed, and it was around the time I graduated from high school. I met an author. I became interested in them, so I searched for their Twitter (now X) account, found it, and read their tweets. That was when a certain tweet caught my eye. The content was something to the effect that people who tweet anonymously without showing their faces are not taking responsibility for their words and actions.
Influenced by that author, I wanted to take proper responsibility for my own words and actions. On the other hand, I felt terrified of revealing my face with a birthmark. But there was also a part of me that felt a kind of longing for people who revealed their real names and faces. I still haven't forgotten the moment I took the plunge, thinking, 'Whatever happens, happens,' and made my real name and face public. But when I think about it now, it's obvious that as an ordinary person, no one would pay any attention to me even if I did reveal my real name and face. As expected, there was no reaction at all when I first posted it. However, I definitely felt a sense of liberation. It was a feeling as if reality and social media had connected and meshed together perfectly.
And there must be others besides me who are struggling with conditions or injuries that affect their appearance. I want to stand in solidarity with such people. To gather companions by revealing my real name and face. And then, to empower those people. I am writing this essay now with those thoughts in mind. Reach them!!!
