Why do your trivial experiences and stories of failure resonate with others? — Perspectives from psychology and philosophy
—Exploring why gentle light shines through, from the perspectives of psychology, behavioral economics, and philosophy
Just as morning light softly spreads through a room behind the curtains,
small experiences or stories of failure that you might think "no one would care about"
can sometimes reach someone's heart gently before you even realize it.
Why does this happen?
1. The power of empathy—The sense of relief in knowing "I wasn't the only one"
In psychology, people feel "empathy" when they encounter the real experiences and emotions of others.
Stories of failure and struggle, in particular, evoke feelings in the reader like "I was the same way" or "I had a time like that too."
This empathy creates a sense of security and courage, gently lifting the burden from their hearts and telling them, "It's okay not to be perfect."
2. Relatable stories move the heart
People are more likely to feel "maybe I can do it too" when hearing about a muddy process or days that didn't go well, rather than glittering success stories.
The "social proof" effect from behavioral economics also comes into play; by knowing that "other people are struggling with similar things," readers can begin to affirm themselves.
3. Imposter syndrome—The flip side of feeling "I'm not good enough"
Many people tend to feel that their own experiences and failures are "insignificant."
This is called "imposter syndrome" in psychology, a mental habit of underestimating one's own value and achievements.
However, readers instinctively know that those very "relatable stories" are what can gently push someone forward.
4. The meaning of "telling" as taught by philosophy
Philosophers argue that "by speaking, people face themselves and connect with others."
By putting your experiences into words and sharing them, you heal yourself, and at the same time, you can light a gentle lamp in someone else's heart.
5. Small experiences become "hope"
Your stories of failure and small daily realizations can become the spark that makes someone somewhere think, "Thank you" or "I'll try my best too."
They hold more value than you might think.
Let's gently share a small story again today.
Your words might just bring a gentle light to someone's heart.
May you, who are working hard today, be able to be just a little kinder to yourself.
I am still on my own journey, but I am also practicing "accepting myself as I am" every day.
I would be happy if I could gently walk alongside your journey somewhere.
