(Addendum) Knowing Enough
Table of Contents Remake: 'Toward a Whiter School'
(Approx. 1300 characters)
What does 'knowing enough' mean?
It is a saying from Laozi, which continues,
'He who knows he has enough is rich, and he who strives has a will.'
It is said that
'those who know how to be satisfied are spiritually rich, and yet it is in those who strive that a will resides.'
As expressed in the continuation, 'he who strives has a will,' it means that one's will truly resides in them only when they understand what they are seeking and are satisfied with it. This does not deny ambition or effort, but rather suggests the importance of first understanding oneself well.
I was looking for words that perfectly fit a feeling I have always had, and I arrived at 'knowing enough'.
The feeling that being here, right now, is a wonder = satisfaction
The first time I felt this was when I stood in the middle of the schoolyard at my first teaching job and looked up at the school building.
'It's a wonder that I'm here working as a teacher... this is amazing... this is enough...'
I felt as if my heart were full. Every time I looked up at the school building from the yard after that, this feeling would return.
When I looked up at the school building from the middle of the yard at the next school I was transferred to, I felt,
'So this is my school now. What a mysterious connection. It's amazing that I'm still working as a teacher like this... this is enough...'
and I felt as if my heart were warming up.
Later, during my job rotation, even when I was working at a school as a vice principal, this feeling would return every time I walked around the school.
(When I was in administration, I'm sorry to say, I didn't feel like I had a 'place to belong'...)
When I was working as a principal, I felt the same way; the very fact that I was a principal felt like a wonder, and every day I thought, 'This is enough. There is nothing more I could wish for,' and I felt nothing but satisfaction.
And now, as I walk around the campus, the feeling that it is a wonder that I exist here continues. As far as work goes, for someone like me, it is more than good enough—it is excellent.
The direction of effort
Since I have taken on the job of a teacher,it is only natural to pursue better lessons.
That is not about giving lessons that are amazing compared to others, but making an effort to provide better lessons for the children in front of me.
Instead of aiming to be better than others, I aim to do the best I can as I am now.
Making properly completing what I am entrusted with my top priority, and repeating it daily without wavering, results will naturally follow.
I do not turn down requests or recommendations from others. With a feeling of going with the flow, I
accept them without being overly ambitious, thinking that things will work out as they will.
Even if I aim for something, there is no need to struggle recklessly.
The mindset that it would be a bonus if it happens someday is just right.
I do not try to force myself to do amazing things.
I do what I can within my own limits, naturally and normally.
I do not try to stretch myself to look cool, nor do I have unrealistic, high expectations that are beyond my station.
There is no need to be humble about praise from others, but I want to remain humble without overestimating my own abilities.
Value what is right in front of you, what you should be doing, and what you are capable of doing.
Something like this.
Summary
If you are satisfied with who you are now and know contentment, you can continue to work with a calm mind...
don't you think? =^_^=
