Reflecting on Why I Started as a Web Writer
“About 80% of web writers quit within a year.” This is information I often see on social media.
Hearing that so many people quit in such a short time might make some wonder, “Do you need a grand reason to keep going as a web writer?”
Of course, there are people who are suited for writing and those who are not.
I have been a freelance web writer for a little over three years, and I have somehow managed to keep at it until now. So, did I become a writer with a noble reason in mind?
This time, as someone who has been doing this for over three years, I have reflected on my “reasons for becoming a web writer.”
I hope my experience and story will be helpful to those who are about to become writers.
The reason I started as a web writer was quite simple
The reason I became a web writer was by no means grand. It was the following three reasons, which I often hear about on social media and elsewhere.
Because I thought it would be easy to start
Because I thought I could do it if it was a writing job
Because I thought I could work silently on my own
Many people probably started for the same reason. For me, starting as a writer was truly simple.
The idea that it is easy to start is because it requires little equipment and has low costs. It is by no means because I thought writing itself was easy.
Also, I felt it offered quick income since you can start working as soon as you secure a project. This is something many writers talk about when you look at social media posts.
The reason was really just that, and there was nothing difficult about it.
I had no room to think about difficult reasons
When I became a web writer, I had no financial or mental breathing room.
It was the year I dropped out of university, and I had no real work experience or even part-time job experience. (*I will post about the time I dropped out of university later!)
My savings were only 280,000 yen, which I had saved over several years while in school. I was in a financial pinch, so I was in a situation where I had to find work immediately.
I dropped out of university in early March. At that time, I had no room to find a job, and I didn't have the mental capacity to interact with people either...
At that time, I started as a "Web writer" as a desperate measure, clutching at straws.
Once I started, I decided to commit to it seriously.
Although it is easy to start as a Web writer, it is actually full of difficulties. Not only is it hard to write the requested text, but it is also difficult to acquire projects, and even if you do, there is no guarantee you will continue.
I vividly remember almost stumbling many times. That is precisely why I made up my mind to become seriously capable of earning money once I started.
The reason was trivial, but I am proud that it is precisely because I committed to it seriously that I am still continuing as a writer today.
The trigger for starting a job can be something small.
Many people who aspire to be writers are serious and sincere, and they tend to think they need a proper reason.
If you state a simple reason,
"Aren't you taking the job lightly!?"
"Are you serious about earning money!?"
Some people might feel a bit anxious that they might invite resentment like this (I was the same...).
However, whether it is a writer or anything else,I think the trigger for starting a job can be simple.Because the important thing is not the reason you started.
It's a cliché way of saying it, but what's important is what happens after you start as a writer.
To work as a Web writer,
"How sincerely can you think about the client and the reader, and how much conviction can you have to continue?"
Having continued as a writer for over three years, I feel that this sentiment is important.
In other words, what is important is your attitude after you have started.
When you continue as a Web writer, you experience many difficult things, such as being treated unreasonably or having shocking events occur.
In such times, it is important to overcome all hardships and continue. Only those who overcome that can encounter fantastic scenery they have never seen before.
In conclusion | What I want to convey to everyone starting as a Web writer
No matter how many tough days continued, I did not quit and have continued to this point. That is why I realize that I have become able to make a living as a writer.
Web writing is something anyone can start relatively easily. However, as with any job, starting it requires great resolve.
I want you all to overcome hardships with me and step into a new world.
From now on, I would like to write down little by little the hardships and the world I have experienced as a writer on note. If you are currently interested in web writing work, I hope my articles will be helpful to you. Well then, please wait a while until the next post!
