You may hear these phrases at exhibitions, in specifications, or during technical meetings.
However, there is actually a point here that many people misunderstand.
EMC and the CE mark are not the same thing.
Today, I will explain this difference so that even beginners and those only slightly involved can understand.

The CE mark is an "Entry Ticket to the EU"
The CE mark is a conformity mark required to sell products in Europe.
Formally, it signifies the manufacturer's self-declaration that:
"This product meets EU laws."
In other words, the CE mark is not a single standard.
It is a mark applied as a result of meeting multiple laws and standards.

What is EMC?
EMC stands for
Electromagnetic Compatibility.
Simply put, it is the ability of electronic devices to operate without interfering with each other.
For example:
Electronic devices do not malfunction near a smartphone.
Medical equipment in a hospital does not stop due to mobile phone radio waves.
Inverter noise in a factory does not affect other equipment.
EMC is the concept for realizing such a world.

There are two types of EMC tests
EMC can be broadly divided into two categories.
① Emission
Not emitting noise to the surroundings.
For example, in a switching power supply, high-frequency noise is generated because the MOSFET switches ON/OFF at high speeds.
If this noise flows out through the power cable or is radiated into space, it may have a negative impact on other equipment.
Therefore, we measure things like:
* Conducted emission
* Radiated emission

② Immunity
Being able to operate normally even when noise comes from the outside.
For example, we confirm that the device does not stop or malfunction even when subjected to:
* Electrostatic discharge (ESD)
* Lightning surges
* High-frequency noise
* Burst noise
In short, emission is a test of "not causing trouble," and immunity is a test of "enduring trouble."
These two make up EMC.

EMC is included within the CE mark
This is the most important point.
If you look at a power supply manufacturer's specifications, you will see entries like:
* CE
* EN 62368-1
* EN 55032
* IEC 61000-4-2
* IEC 61000-4-5
* RoHS
Looking at this, it feels like "CE" and "EMC" are written separately.
However, in reality, it shows that the product conforms to EMC standards in order to obtain the CE mark.
If you visualize it, the structure is:

In other words, EMC is a part of the CE mark.

The reason it is called "CE EMC testing"
In practice, you often hear terms like "CE EMC testing" or "CE EMC report."
This means the EMC testing required to obtain the CE mark.
Therefore, it is often thought that "EMC = CE," but that is fundamentally incorrect.

It is easy to understand if you compare it to a house
I often use this analogy in new employee training.
The CE mark is a house.
Inside it, there are:
* A room called EMC
* A room called Safety Standards
* A room called RoHS
EMC is not the entire house.
It is just one room inside the house.
In other words, a state of "having passed only EMC" is like having only one room completed in a house.
The entire house is not yet finished.
Conversely, having obtained the CE mark means that all necessary rooms are completed and it is ready to be shipped to the EU market.

What power engineers should know
In power supply design, EMC countermeasures cannot be avoided.
Designing input filters, reviewing wiring, optimizing grounds, and adding shields.
Only through such accumulation can you pass EMC tests.
However, that alone does not allow you to obtain the CE mark.
Only by including compliance with safety standards and response to hazardous substance regulations can you display the CE mark.
