[Book Review] 2035: Japan 10 Years Later - Horiemon's Complete Guide to Future Predictions
I've never been very good at predicting the future, and
even when I try to make a prediction,
it always ends up being just an extension of the present.
Well, there is no doubt that the future
is an extension of the present,
but somehow, I just end up imagining
that life 10 years from now
will be exactly like it is today.
However, just as one can enjoy shogi or chess
even without great foresight,
I personally don't dislike thinking
about the future or what lies ahead.
With that kind of inclination,
while I was looking for my next book to read,
this one suddenly caught my eye.
My own predictions don't differ much from the present,
but what kind of future
would someone other than me predict?
I read with great interest
(I will refer to him this way as per the title)
about the 10 years from now
that Horiemon envisions.

That idea is interesting
The book begins with a discussion on AI.
Honestly, for anyone with a certain level of interest in AI,
(including myself), it's a topic
that is easy to imagine.
It might be boring to say it's boring, but
that just means my own predictions
(despite not being as knowledgeable as he is)
are on the right track,
I suppose.
However, starting from the section on "eradicating illegal parking,"
it suddenly starts to feel much more interesting.
What I find interesting about reading his books
is that they contain many ideas and perspectives
that I would never come up with myself.
It is certainly true that the sheer amount of knowledge
and information he is exposed to is overwhelmingly different,
but even if I had the same amount of information
as he does,
there are many things where I think,
"I probably wouldn't have arrived at that idea."
Indeed, the proposals in this section
also made me, a layman,
groan in agreement.
Create the values of the future starting now
Elsewhere, in the section "Packed Trains Are Immortal,"
I thought his remark was spot on.
In a world that is changing
due to technology that advances daily,
not to mention 10 years from now,
people are divided into those who accept and adapt to change,
and those who cling to the status quo and reject change.
If anything, I myself
have a conservative nature.
Nevertheless, no matter how much I might object
to the changes of the times,
I at least understand that I cannot stop
that great flow on my own.
If that's the case, it's better to think positively,
actively accept the changes,
and adapt,
as that is how one enjoys life.
When reading this book (or rather, his books),
beyond just this section,
"Why don't you just do this?"
ideas are presented one after another.
That way of thinking might just
become the standard of the future.
Thinking about it that way, perhaps Horiemon
is trying to say,
"Start creating the values of the future now."
Knowing the present better than the future
In any case, this book presents current issues,
solutions, and future predictions
across a wide range of fields,
not just AI and software.
Although each one might be a social issue
you've heard of before,
it is difficult for any one individual
to gather insights from diverse fields
in a balanced way.
For example, I have a relatively strong interest
and am well-informed about infrastructure issues,
but because I have little interest in food,
I am completely ignorant about food issues.
From that perspective,
being able to learn about
Horiemon's
(though he is also just one individual)
views on various fields and
the state of the world through him
is very much appreciated.
Of course, as the title suggests,
there are things that make you think
about the future 10 years from now,
but for me, I felt satisfied
learning about the state of "current" society
through his knowledge.
For those who have read many of Horiemon's books
or are well-versed in current events and trends,
this might be a somewhat boring book
with little freshness.
Especially if you have read several of his books,
there are some parts where you can predict,
"Horiemon would think like this."
However, for those who are not,
it will likely be a meaningful book
that provides new perspectives and insights
into the modern world we live in
and the future we are about to walk into.

and current state of today's society
Might not be for these people...
