Reading Speed and Ease of Understanding - I wrote this last week #15 -

Hello everyone. This is Naseka.
I define myself as a philosopher and book reviewer.

Since last week, I have been reading Detective Conan as my daily reading assignment (?).

As expected, when it comes to stories from 30 years ago, there are many parts I have forgotten.
Even though I know the general outline up to the middle,
I am enjoying reading it.

※ I am a participant in the Amazon Associates program.

Oh, that's right, I realized something while reading Conan.

Compared to ONE PIECE, which I was reading every day before Conan, the cognitive load is quite low.

Of course, the difference between a work I am seeing for the first time and one I already know is significant, but I realized it while thinking as I read.
I understood why reading ONE PIECE was so difficult (for me).

It is because I amreading while trying to understand the worldviewfrom the start.

In other words, the setting of Conan is modern-day Japan, so even if some unique place names or proper nouns appear, I don't struggle to understand them.

On the other hand, ONE PIECE takes place in a completely unique world where adventures and battles unfold, so a first-time reader cannot fully enjoy it without understanding that world.
(Unless you are just skimming through it, that is.)

Of course, this might not be the case if you are reading at a low-burden pace or if the reader has spare processing capacity.
(This part is also largely due to my own physical stamina...)

Thinking about it that way, the same could be said for novels.
For works that unfold in unique settings or worlds, it is important how well you can immerse the reader in that world without making them feel burdened.

...Well, I don't write (and cannot write) novels of that kind at all.

While reading Conan, I gained such an insight in a place completely unrelated to the content.

Since such knowledge and ideas are born from unexpected works, manga is not something to be dismissed at all.

Now, I wonder when Kaito Kid, Heiji-kun, and Ai-chan will appear.
I look forward to reading more every day.
