Today, however, this structure is reaching its limits. The existence of nuclear weapons demonstrates that conflict among nations has entered a stage where civilization itself can be annihilated. At the same time, global warming, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution reveal problems that no single nation can solve alone. Furthermore, the development of information technology has intensified misinformation and emotional polarization, destabilizing democratic societies themselves.
In such an era, AI is not merely a convenient tool. It holds the potential to create a new principle of human evolution. The essential strength of AI lies in its ability to process vast amounts of information, integrate diverse perspectives, and visualize complex relationships. In other words, AI can support humanity in overcoming one of its greatest limitations: the inability to collectively manage complexity.
For example, environmental issues involve intertwined layers of nations, corporations, citizens, and ecosystems. Problems once treated solely as conflicts of interest may, through AI-driven analysis and simulation, be reframed into pathways for coexistence. In education, AI-driven personalized learning could reduce disparities in knowledge and provide learning opportunities regardless of geography or economic status.
Moreover, AI may function as a “translational layer” between human beings. Differences in culture, religion, values, and language have long produced division and conflict. AI, however, may become a mediator capable of interpreting and connecting different perspectives. This is not merely a matter of machine translation, but the emergence of an intelligence that assists mutual understanding itself.
Of course, AI also carries serious risks. Surveillance societies, information manipulation, autonomous weapons, and widening inequality are all possibilities. Depending on how it is used, AI could reinforce violent structures of domination. Therefore, the most important question is not simply whether humanity develops AI, but rather what values will guide the design of AI civilization. Technology is never neutral. It always reflects human ethics and human choices.
For this reason, the future requires a new concept: a civilization of “AI co-creation.” This means that humans and AI should not stand in opposition, but instead complement one another’s imperfections while jointly shaping society. Human beings possess emotion, ethics, and empathy, while AI excels in calculation, analysis, and the management of complexity. Through collaboration between the two, humanity may finally gain the possibility of building a civilization founded on coexistence.
Coexistence here does not mean naïve harmony. Rather, it means a dynamic process in which differences and diversity are continuously adjusted through dialogue. In nature, ecosystems are sustained through countless interactions among living beings. Likewise, future civilization must evolve beyond a society driven solely by competition toward a “biospheric civilization” in which diverse forms of existence support one another.
