Huh? I can't sit cross-legged on tatami! A story about how my cross-legged sitting changed without ever touching my hip joints.
Hello!
Riku @ Riku's Zero Axis Seitai here, Riku Matsuyama!
This time, I'm sharing the story of a male client in his 60s who couldn't sit cross-legged anymore due to pain.
It all started with this one comment.
"I went to a tatami room, and I couldn't sit cross-legged..."
He went out for a meal with friends.
They were shown to a tatami room, and when he tried to sit cross-legged.
It hurt.
He couldn't even do it in the first place.
This is actually quite a shock, isn't it?
By the way, I played soccer when I was a student, and back then, sitting cross-legged on the floor was just something I did naturally.
It was so natural that I never thought to say "thank you" to being able to sit cross-legged. Haha.
But one day, when you can't do it anymore, you suddenly realize how big of a deal it was.
In life, there are many things we only realize after we've lost them.
Back to the story. Haha.
Sitting cross-legged hurts.
When you hear that,
"It must be a hip joint problem."
is what you'd think, right?
I think that at first, too.
But when I examined his body, it was a little different.
Certainly, there was stiffness on the inside of my left thigh, and there was pain there as well.
But,
"Hmm???"
That wasn't the only thing that caught my attention.
As I looked into it,
the left hip bone.
That's the large bone on the side of the pelvis.
The "suture" part here had become stiff.
A suture is like a joint between bones.
When this area stiffens, the movement around the pelvis tends to drop significantly.
And one more thing.
The left shoulder.
"Wait, shoulder? We're talking about sitting cross-legged, right?"
You'd think that, right? Haha.
I think so too.
But the body is connected.
There was a restriction in the movement of the left shoulder joint.
I examined this area.
I'll go in order.
First, the left hip bone.
When you loosen the sutures, space is created around the pelvis.
The image is like a gap suddenly appearing in joints that were stiff and locked up.
Then, the angle of your cross-legged sitting starts to change.
And then the left shoulder.
As you loosen the restrictions in the shoulder joint,
Wait, what?
Even though I was touching my shoulder, the movement of my cross-legged sitting changed.
This is interesting, isn't it?
When you loosen the shoulder, the way your legs open changes.
The body is truly connected in very distant places.
If you compare it to a company,
you might think it's a problem in the sales department, but actually there is trouble in the accounting department,
and the overall flow has become poor.
It's like that.
Even if it looks like a shoulder problem, it can actually be affecting the hip joints or pelvis.
Conversely, if you think it's a hip joint problem, there are cases where the shoulder is involved.
The body is not independent by department,
but is like a single company.
If one place works too hard or is overworked,
It starts to affect other areas as well.
This time, too,
the tension in the shoulders may have been gradually affecting the back, the pelvis,
and even the movement of the hip joints.
It may have been slowly having an impact.
That is why this time, I did not do anything like aggressively massaging the hip joints.
What I looked at was,
Checking the stiffness of the inner left thigh
The suture of the left hip bone.
The restriction of the left shoulder joint.
It was around these areas.
And what is important is that I also had them do self-care together with the treatment.
Adjusting with treatment and maintaining it yourself.
When these two wheels turn together, changes become easier to appear.
At first,
"I can barely sit cross-legged"
was the state, but as the sessions repeated,
"It has become easier to move than before"
"The pain on the inside has stopped bothering me"
And finally,
"Oh, sitting cross-legged has become comfortable"
The tatami seating at the soba restaurant is no longer scary.
I can sit and spend time with friends without any hesitation.
I think this was the biggest thing for this person.
The fact that it became easier to sit cross-legged is important in itself.
But even more than that,
being able to sit normally on tatami again
recovering this sense of normalcy was what made them happy.
When you get images taken at the hospital,
you are often told,
"There are no abnormalities."
It is true that it doesn't show up on an X-ray.
But in reality, you cannot sit on tatami.
"No abnormalities in the images" does not mean "there is nothing more that can be done."
That is what I believe.
It is a bit of a waste to just end it there.
What about the inside of the thighs?
What about the pelvis and the hip bones?
What about the shoulders?
When you look at the whole body like that, you can sometimes find hints hidden in unexpected places.
Sitting cross-legged hurts.
My hip joints are stiff.
That is exactly when you shouldn't just look at the hip joints.
The body is connected.
It's not just the hip joints that are the problem. It's not just the pelvis. It's not just the shoulders.
The interesting thing about humans is that you can't divide things up that easily.
The person themselves probably never thought that one of the reasons they couldn't sit cross-legged on tatami anymore might actually have been their left shoulder. Haha.
The body really isn't straightforward, is it?
