Prayers to God, Oranges for You
A single path paved with gravel
With every step, the solemn main hall comes into view
A quiet time flows through the clear air
Clang, clang, clang
You, ringing the bell with all your might and a happy face
My chance to breathe in the fresh air was stolen away
Seeing me with my heart composed as I prayed
"Mommy, what did you wish for?"
"I asked God that everyone stays healthy and keeps smiling. Do you want to make a wish?"
Then, with a serious look, you thought for a moment
"Is it okay to wish for oranges to eat?"
you asked me in all earnestness
My laughter echoes through the quiet temple grounds
I cannot take my eyes off your profile
as you press your little hands together in prayer
I make an additional request to God
Please, let this child continue to grow up with a straight and honest smile
Please, please, let this child be happy
A being for whom I wish more happiness than my own
Meeting you is the greatest happiness of my life
I cannot shelter and protect you
from all the many things you will experience from now on
But I can wish for you and watch over you
I believe that God exists
Wishes will surely be heard
From here on out, I will continue to offer prayers to God
You, eating the oranges I bought on the way home with such delight
Did you believe in God?
