Un, Deux, Trois
I discovered this while drifting through YouTube as usual. It is a cover video of
Candies's 15th single "Un, Deux, Trois".
The original song is a standard eight-beat, but this cover has been rearranged into a 6/8 time signature.
Generally, when rearranging a 4/4 melody into a 6/8 (effectively 3/4) rhythm, if you try to keep the original tempo, the melody becomes too crowded with syllables, and if you double the beat count, it feels dragged out; so the key is how to find a compromise.
This cover adopts the double-count method and further adjusts the timing of the vocal entry slightly in each section, resulting in a truly precise and stylish rhythmic phrasing.
In particular, the chorus part, "Un, deux, trois... shall we dance...", has been reharmonized with a two-five progression, and I think it has turned into a truly excellent melody.
By the way, here is the original song.
Lyrics: Tadashi Kito, Composition: Takuro Yoshida, Arrangement: Koji Makaino
Listening to it again, it really is a well-crafted song. Wonderful.
As an aside, I really hate lazy, easy "imitation covers" that say things like "I made the original song bluesy" or "I made it bossa nova style."
If you are going to cover a song, I want you to apply "precise arrangement artistry" like this cover does.
...Oops, I said something unnecessary again.
