Prompts and the "Time Axis"—Making Thinking Three-Dimensional by Having AI Narrate the Flow (Generative AI Prompt Textbook 15)
There is a common thread in the moments when we feel we have "understood something."
It is when it is grasped not as a "point," but as a "line."
How a mechanism begins, what happens, and where it is heading.When it is told along the axis of time, we can finally say, "I see."
However, many prompts forget that "time."
When asking generative AI for information, most people are only looking at the "now."
"What is XX?" "How do I use it?" "What are the benefits?"—all of these are asking about the "current state."
But to gain a truly deep understanding, you need to consider it including "how it has changed" and "how it will become."
In other words, you incorporate a "time axis" into your prompt.
✅ Basic Prompt (Dividing time into three):
Please explain this technology by dividing it into three phases: past, present, and future.
・When was it born, and why did it appear? (Past)
・How is it being used now? (Present)
・What developments are expected in the future? (Future)
——With just this prompt, the AI's narrative changes from a "dictionary" to a "documentary."
When you add a time axis, generative AI naturally begins to engage with "causal relationships," "background of change," and "imagination for the future."
It goes beyond a mere "summary of information" and becomes an explanation as a "story."
✅ Applied Prompt ① (Tracking the changes of a person/entity):
Please explain how ChatGPT's development philosophy has changed from the initial GPT-1, focusing on the evolution of each model from a "philosophical perspective." Please focus on the transition of ideas rather than just technical performance.
✅ Applied Prompt ② (Having it narrate shifts in values):
How has the concept of "fulfillment at work" changed over the past 10 years? And what will it be like 10 years from now?
Please answer by incorporating changes in social background, technology, and generational values.

The strength of time-axis prompts is not just for understanding.It is also exceptionally effective when making strategies or plans.
✅ Reverse Calculation from the Future Prompt:
Assume that this project has succeeded one year from now. Please explain what was done during the 12 months leading up to that success, divided into monthly phases. Include strategy, execution tasks, team structure, etc.
——This is, so to speak, a prompt that "designs time from the future." The AI will create a path by calculating backward from the goal.
It can also be applied to more philosophical questions.
✅ Ontological Prompt:
How has "humanity" been defined over the past 100 years? And how is it changing in the modern era as generative AI rises? Furthermore, what do you think the definition will be 50 years from now?

—Incorporating a timeline also means switching your perspective to a "bird's-eye view."
