🎬 The 'Power to Stare at Hell' Left Behind by Master Akira Kurosawa. The Truth Where London 30 Years Ago and AI Intersect [Code: Mn-137 Ep.10 Released]
Hello, this is Bell note.
How do you behave when you are faced with something so terrifying that you cannot bear to look at it? Do you turn your eyes away, or do you run away?
The treasure of Japanese cinema, director Akira Kurosawa, titled his autobiography 'Toad's Oil.' It refers to the cold sweat shed by a toad surrounded by mirrors, startled by its own ugliness.
The director likened the act of telling his own life story to such a painful process.
This 10th episode of 'Code: Mn-137' serves as the series' greatest turning point, touching upon the master's harrowing philosophy of life.
'Watch closely'—The gaze required to survive hell
The true nature of the 'prophecy' that Furusawa reaches in episode 10. It was the memory of the Great Kanto Earthquake that director Akira Kurosawa (referred to as Akira Kurokawa in the story) wrote about in his autobiography.
In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake occurred. Tokyo, immediately after the fires were extinguished, was a hellish landscape with charred corpses scattered everywhere. Kurosawa, then 13 years old, was taken by his older brother to walk through that devastation.
When he tried to look away from the sight, his brother said this to him:
'Watch closely. Akira, do not look away. It is only scary because you do not look directly at it.'
When you stare at something terrifying or ugly without running away, the fear vanishes, and the 'truth that must be depicted' emerges. This spirit of 'staring' became the power that later produced masterpieces like 'Kagemusha.'
The voice that Furusawa believed was a 'prophecy for himself' was actually a miraculous 'cheer from a predecessor' born from an AI misrecognition.
The true nature of the curse called 'universal skills'
In the story, Furusawa is depicted as a man who once dreamed of being a film director in London but failed. This is based on my own memories of a chaotic London in my 20s.
Despairing of my own 'value,' I received the words 'acquire universal skills' from a certain film director. At the time, I thought it was merely advice to acquire technical skills.
However, in this modern age where AI restores past footage and even 'reconstructs' lost memories, these words begin to take on a completely different meaning.
Could universal skills not be mere 'techniques,' but rather the 'power to keep looking' without turning away, no matter the reality?
In this episode, a 'silent VTR' that had been sleeping in the archives of Britain University in London breaks its silence.
As an homage to director Akira Kurosawa
This time, I have placed one of director Kurosawa's philosophies at the core of the story. This is not merely a citation, but because I wanted to reaffirm through the story the 'courage to face reality' that we are on the verge of losing in this day and age. It is also a challenge to try and accept the heavy baton left by the master in my own way, through the lens of modern AI.
When the illusion of the prophecy was shattered, what Furusawa obtained was the 'will to walk on his own two feet.'
Please witness the moment where the master's soul, written in my own expression, intersects with modern AI.
