[Final Chapter] Investing is a 'Journey of Self-Discovery'
~Investing is a 'Journey of Self-Discovery'~
Hello. I'm 'Hamon,' a salaryman dad aiming to quit my job in 7 years.
I started investing to spend more time with my family but the anxiety about money never ends. Relying solely on my company salary won't make my worries about education costs or retirement funds disappear. To quit my job in 7 years,
I need to increase my income streams. Investing was one of those options.
Money hardly grows just by leaving it in a bank. So, to grow my assets efficiently, I've challenged myself with methods like investment trusts, foreign currency, FX, and cryptocurrencies.
In my previous article, I touched on 'opening an account,' 'fund management,' and 'how to deal with risk,' but what I realize again is that investing is not only a 'means to increase money' but also a journey to know yourself.

🐻 The Importance of Consistency
When I started investing, I would check apps and websites almost every day, wondering, 'Did it go up? Did it go down?' and my mood would swing accordingly. However, after starting to save in investment trusts from 1,000 yen, I realized that 'even small amounts can take shape if you keep at it.'
As I continued, I felt a sense of security in the numbers that were piling up.
I learned that investing is 'the act of continuing itself' which leads to self-trust.
🐻 The Meaning of Gaining Experience Little by Little
Of course, it doesn't always just go up smoothly. In fact, there was a time when the 10,000 yen I had saved in an investment trust dropped to 9,500 yen (a 5% loss). I still remember the sinking feeling in my chest when I saw the numbers turn red, and the anxiety I felt, thinking, 'Maybe I should just quit...'
But I held back the urge to cancel, and after a few months, it returned to a profit.
What I learned through this experience is—
Don't panic even if it drops temporarily
Don't be swayed by emotions
Know your own risk tolerance
that is what I learned.
👉 How about you all?
If 10,000 yen became 9,500 yen, could you keep going?
Or would you let it go out of anxiety?
I believe these small experiences are opportunities to learn your own 'mental resilience toward investing'.
3. Investing is a 'Journey of Self-Discovery'
What I learned through investing is that it reveals more about my personality and values than just the fluctuations in numbers.
I am prone to worry, but I can be more persistent than I thought
I am better suited for long-term, steady growth than taking big risks
The goal of investing is not 'money itself,' but 'increasing free time with my family'
Furthermore, greed and the presence of my family also became great hints for understanding myself. There were times when I made a profit in FX and got greedy, thinking, 'I should be able to get more,' which only led to larger losses. When my wife said, '
Why don't you take your profit instead of being greedy?', I replied, 'It's going to go up further,' and left it alone. A few minutes later, my unrealized gains turned into a loss, and that was when I realized I had forgotten to check the economic indicators, leading to some self-reflection.
Through each of these experiences, I have come to realize that investing is not just asset management, but a mirror that reflects my personality, desires, and values.
🐻 Summary
Investing is not just about looking at whether your money has 'increased or decreased.'
Cultivate the power to continue
Learn how to deal with risk
Find a style that suits you
Reconfirm what you truly value
I believe the accumulation of these things is the essence of the 'journey of self-discovery.'
For me, investing is a means to achieve my goal of quitting my job in seven years and increasing free time with my family. I want to continue moving forward little by little, overcoming the waves of the economy and the fluctuations of my emotions.
👉 From the next post onwards, I will talk about 'specific investment strategies and more in-depth personal experiences.'
To you, who read this: You don't need perfect preparation to start investing.
Start with even just 1,000 yen. That should be the first step on your own journey of self-discovery.
