When You Notice Subtle Kindness: The Happiness Brought by Unexpected Connections
I am usually the type of person who finds interacting with others a bit burdensome.
I tend to overthink the expressions and words of the people I interact with, so I get very nervous when I'm talking to someone.
If I overthink, I can't say anything at all, and if I speak without caution, I later find myself wondering if my choice of words was appropriate or if there was a better way to convey what I meant.
I know that my worry is unfounded, as I rarely feel that the people who spend time with me had a boring time, but I still end up thinking about it anyway.
I think that for me, thinking about all these things is a hobby of mine.
Looking at things from various angles and considering how my words and actions affected the other person must be a natural thing for me to do.
Because of that, although I am not good at socializing, I never find other people to be a nuisance.
I think there are many wonderful people in my world, including friends, acquaintances, and even those I don't interact with much.
I am someone who uses a lot of energy to meet and talk with others.
I get very nervous about meeting and talking to people or attending social events.
Today, I went to meet and talk with someone who is always busy and active. Even though they are a different type of person than I am, it was a stimulating time where I got to hear some very good stories.
Because I wanted to have a fun conversation, I kept my brain running at full capacity to listen, so I was completely exhausted by the time I headed home.
Interacting with people really takes a lot of energy. As someone who tries to save energy and always chooses to avoid it, I think that people who work in jobs that involve facing others must be very tough.
On the train ride home, I was staring blankly at the scenery outside the window, reflecting on today's conversation. I was certainly tired, but it is also true that the time was very fulfilling. And then, I suddenly realized something: even the interactions with people that I usually find burdensome can sometimes give me new discoveries and joy.
Connections with strangers can bring peace to the heart.
Also, today was a day where I encountered a lot of kindness from strangers.
I had some time before my appointment, so I was taking a break at a cafe. When the time came and I stood up from my seat, I left my parasol behind.
A woman who noticed this chased after me to hand me the parasol I had forgotten. She acted so quickly and naturally, without making me feel self-conscious as I headed to my next destination, and I felt it was very smart of her.
Also, people who quickly make way when passing in a narrow shop, or people who subtly make space for me to stand in a crowded train. When I encounter such small kindnesses, no matter how busy the day is, my heart feels lighter in an instant.
When I go out, I often feel that everyone is tired somewhere. Even so, I was made aware that there are many people who show consideration that I or others might not notice, and who are kind in a quick way that doesn't make you feel self-conscious.
Being able to be kind naturally, without expecting anything in return. Such subtle acts of kindness stay in your heart for a long time.
The happiness of sharing something
Also, while it's a little different from kindness, the moment I realize I am sharing something with others in a fleeting instant is also a great joy for me.
Today is an important game that will decide whether the professional baseball team I support, the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, can advance to the Climax Series Final Stage.
I had errands to run and couldn't watch the game at home, so I was rushing home while checking the live score updates on the train.
Suddenly, I overheard a parent and child sitting across from me on the train talking about the result of the game I was concerned about.
At that moment, I realized they were supporting the same team as me, and I felt unexpectedly happy. While there are many fans in my home region of Hokkaido, thinking that someone in the same train car in Tokyo was cheering for them in the same way made me feel happy for some reason.
A day when interacting with others, which I usually find difficult, felt comfortable
Today was a strange day for me.
I was very anxious about my plans to meet someone, and I was on guard the whole time thinking about what we would talk about. It was a day that made me realize once again how much energy I use for interacting with people, but...
Through the light 'interactions' with the person who brought me something I had forgotten, the person on the train who was subtly considerate, and the parent and child, I realized that 'interacting with others,' which I tend to view negatively, could be so comforting.
I think the reason the calm air outside and the scenery from the train window felt more beautiful than usual is thanks to the many people I met today.
Noticing things makes daily life shine
Because I am sensitive to others' expressions and tend to overthink things, I used to think it only led to exhaustion, but I feel like I was able to have a very positive outlook today thanks to this habit of mine.
I tend to be negative about interacting with others, but when I encounter subtle kindness like I did today, I realize that there were actually many warm and gentle interactions in my daily life all along.
If there are moments like this where I can feel so relieved by encounters and exchanges with people, I thought that going out once in a while isn't so bad.
Thanks to today, I feel like I've come to like my own senses, which I didn't really like before, just a little bit more.
