Let's play baseball! Shohei Ohtani's gloves reach a small elementary school in Niigata
My children attend an elementary school in Niigata.
It is a very, very small school with a total student body of less than 100.
Even to such a small school,
Shohei Ohtani's gloves have arrived.

Our family doesn't usually watch much TV.
Even so, the children have known about
Shohei Ohtani for a long time.
To the children, he is an "amazing person."
Such an amazing baseball player
sent gloves for them,
who attend a small school in the countryside.
The children must have been so happy.
(In fact, my child happily talked about the gloves at home too.)
Three gloves arrived.
One of them is for a left-handed player.

And the message from Ohtani-san included on the side is
Let's play baseball!

It's just too cool.
I am proud that there is such a cool adult
in Japan.
And here is the letter from Ohtani-san to the school staff.

I will quote a part of it.
These three gloves are a donation to the school. More than that, I hope these gloves will serve as a symbol to inspire and encourage the next generation. This is because baseball is the sport that gave me the opportunity to live a fulfilling life.
Through the symbol of the gloves,
Ohtani-san is trying to
inspire and encourage the children.
Watching the back of this great man, Ohtani-san,
the generation of children who have been encouraged
will build the next Japan.
Various things have happened since the beginning of this year.
Even so, I hope that Japan will be a country where children all over can have dreams.
I interpreted "Let's play baseball!" as also meaning
"Let's have hope!"
as well.
Even when things are tough or painful,
even when you feel down,
the reason you can take a step forward from there
is because there is hope ahead.
I won't tell children they have to become someone amazing.
But I do hope they find something they can proudly say,
"This is what I love more than anything!"
about.
That "something" that can set their hearts on fire
will surely become a source of support for them.
Seeing Shohei Ohtani's gloves,
I, too, as an adult, wondered,
am I living a life that sets a good example for children...?
It made me straighten my posture.
We don't need to aim to be like Shohei Ohtani either.
But there must be something only you can do,
something only you can talk about.
Children are always watching you work hard
with their straight, honest eyes.
This was Kireimichi.
Farewell!
