The Flat Devil! A story about how I, a lazy person, lost my mind and tried making lasagna from scratch
It has been over two weeks since schools closed.
We can barely go out even on weekends.
I've really started to feel the frustration building up.
"I want to eat lasagna..."
A sudden thought that popped into my head.
But we are refraining from eating out right now.
I want to feed my son, who is always at home, something different for a change.
And above all, I want to eat lasagna.
Lasagna
Lasagna
Lasagna
I want to eat it.
When I casually looked up how to make it, it seemed easier than I thought.
...Maybe I'll try making it.
That was the devil's whisper.
1. How to make lasagna dough
● Cake flour 100g
● Bread flour 100g
● Eggs 2
● Olive oil 1 tbsp
● Salt 1/2 tsp
① Put the cake flour, bread flour, and salt into a bowl and mix well.
② Make a well in the center and add the beaten eggs and olive oil.
③ Use chopsticks to mix the dough from the outside in.
Once it starts to come together, knead it by hand.
4. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator for about an hour.
5. On a floured surface, roll the dough out to a thickness of about 1 millimeter.
6. Since the dough expands when boiled, cut it into smaller pieces.
7. Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook for about 5 minutes.
The ingredients are things I have at home, and it doesn't seem that difficult.
Yeah, let's give it a try.
Trying something new should be fun.
2. Actually making it
I'll proceed step by step according to the instructions.
Kneading the flour is just like making a tart! I've made simple tarts before, so I'm feeling enthusiastic. The work went smoothly.
Now, just let the dough rest.
If I start rolling it out about an hour before dinner, it should be perfect for lunch. I thought lightly.
I let the dough rest until the time was up.
Then I started the rolling process.
Since the only surface I have is a cutting board, I guess I'll just do it on that.
Cleaning up flour is a pain, so maybe I'll just lay down some plastic wrap.
I start rolling out the dough with a rolling pin.
That's when I realize.
1 millimeter is actually pretty thin. (Obviously)
The dough keeps spreading as I try to thin it out.
The width of the cutting board is clearly becoming insufficient.
I finally realize.
You can't do big tasks on a cutting board!
This was after the dough had already spread quite a bit.
Well, I guess I'll just cut the dough in half and roll that out.
I'll set the rest of the dough aside...

Behold! This level of laziness.
Now I'll roll out the halved dough. The second rolling session.
The dough spreads rapidly.
It looks like it's about to fall off the cutting board.
But I still feel like the dough is too thick.
Oh well.
It'll probably be fine even if it's a bit thick.
I put it on a tray and cut it with a knife.
Now, for the other half...
Roll it out, and cut it with a knife.
And then stack them on the tray.
Alright, that was tough, but now all that's left is to boil it!
I threw the dough into the pot of boiling water!!!
Or so I thought, but
the dough pieces stuck together and wouldn't come apart!!
This is a crisis!!
If only I had used flour back then...
If only I hadn't stacked the dough pieces back then...
If only I hadn't tried to do it on a cutting board in the first place...
It was too late for regrets.
A tragedy brought on by laziness.
When I peeled apart the soggy, stuck-together dough,
it was a truly miserable sight.
Sloppy, unrecognizable blobs.
It was beyond repair as it was.
At this point, I had to start over.
I had no choice but to
roll out the torn pieces with a rolling pin once again.
This was the third time rolling them out.
I rolled them out one by one, just like gyoza wrappers.
I should have done it this way from the start...
Yes, if they are small, there is less effort to roll them out, and they
fit on the cutting board.
It was easier to handle, too.
I realized it too late.
I cursed my own laziness.
However, rolling them out one by one was also quite a back-breaking task.
I rolled and
rolled and
rolled and
it never ended.
It was like a scene from the Sai no Kawara.
How many did I do?
The pile of dough still waiting for me...
Just endlessly
rolling and boiling
Roll it out and boil it
Almost done.
By that time, my heart was screaming.
"You flat devil!!!"
In reality, this voice was leaking outside as well.
And after a struggle lasting nearly an hour
the lasagna dough was finished...

This shape. Truly a lazy-sagna!
Finally done!!!
But the summit of the lasagna mountain is still far away.
Because there is still the task of layering the meat sauce and white sauce!!!
Why did I choose this menu...
I seriously cursed myself.
Fortunately, I had made the white sauce yesterday.
I also managed to make the meat sauce while the dough was boiling.
All that was left was to layer it.
But the exhaustion from rolling out the dough over and over hit me.
My motivation was already on its last legs.
But for the sake of my child, I had to feed them lunch...
Lunchtime had long since passed.
As a mother, I have to do this!!
I layered the floppy, flat things that I'm not even sure can be called dough
with the two types of sauce, topped it with cheese, and...
I was finally able to put it in the toaster oven!!!
It had been such a long road to get here.
I really thought that restaurant staff are amazing.
How much effort does this take? Lasagna, you...
And this is what I ended up with.

The plating is lazy too! I just piled up the broken pieces along with the rest.

This is what the cross-section looks like.
After trying it, I realized,
it's better to just buy the pasta sheets.
I heard you can even use gyoza wrappers.
When you have to make both white sauce and meat sauce,
there are just too many steps for a lazy person.
If only I had realized that sooner...
At the very least, to lay these feelings to rest,
I decided to write about it here on note.
To everyone who read this far,
thank you so much!!
[P.S.]
But, it did taste delicious!
The uneven thickness of the dough is just part of the charm.
The kids ate their fill too!
My motherly duties are done for now.
Good work today.
