My vegetable-hating child ate them happily on their own! What is the Leafy Green Roulette?
A child's dislike of vegetables is quite a formidable foe, isn't it?
Especially leafy greens.
Because they have such a beautiful green color,
they get found out as soon as you put them in a dish.
If you dare to serve a dish
made only of leafy greens, they'll completely ignore it.
Leafy greens are rich in vitamins.
If possible, I want my children to eat them.
But forcing them to eat by saying 'Eat your vegetables!'
feels a bit wrong,
and I wish for them to enjoy eating vegetables.
Seeing my child eating happily
is the greatest joy for a mother.

Even so, I was always
racking my brain over how to get them
to eat leafy greens in a fun way.
Then, the other day in our home,
I tried a strategy on my first-grade daughter,
and she started gobbling up leafy greens on her own.
'I want to eat more!'
she said, super enthusiastically.
I've found a great strategy.
So,
I really want mothers all over Japan
who are struggling with their children's picky eating to use it too.

Happily eating leafy greens
Leafy Green Roulette
I will introduce it today.
I hope you too can use this magic to make the dining table fun!
The day Japanese people think about leafy greens
There is one day in the year when Japanese people
are most conscious of leafy greens.
That is... January 7th, the day of Nanakusa-gayu (seven-herb rice porridge).

When you go to the supermarket, you see special sets of leafy vegetables like the seven-herb set, don't you?
When I see the words 'seven herbs',
I think, 'Ah, it's the day for seven-herb porridge. But my child doesn't eat leafy greens.'
I used to give up before even putting them on the table.
However, on the day of the seven herbs last year, a revolution happened in our home.
My vegetable-hating daughter, who was in her final year of preschool at the time, happily gobbled up the leafy greens.
It was a miracle in our house.
The strategy I used at that time was
Vegetable Championship
What is the Vegetable Championship... It's a fun parent-child event where you line up 7 types of leafy greens and compete to see which one is the tastiest
(I, Kireido, came up with the idea and named it myself)
I talk about it in detail in this article below.
Come back after you read it! 💖
The result was a huge success.
My daughter happily gobbled up the leafy greens.
A year has passed since then.
The day of the seven-herb porridge has come again.
I'm sure she's forgotten about last year, so I could have done the same Vegetable Championship again, but this year I upgraded it.
I came up with a new strategy.

Leafy Green Roulette!!

*Note: Leafy greens + Russian Roulette = Leafy Green Roulette.
(Don't you dare say it's lame!)
This was another big hit in our house.
My daughter fell for it hook, line, and sinker,
and she was gobbling up the leafy greens on her own.
And it was completely unadulterated.
The dish was just 'leafy greens with soy sauce poured over them',
yet my child couldn't stop eating them.
Following last year's Vegetable Championship,
it's another remarkable achievement.
So,
what exactly is the Leafy Green Roulette?
I will introduce the whole picture.
A vegetable hater ate them! What is the full story behind the Leafy Green Roulette?
Our family's 2024 Seven Herbs were
borrowed from the vegetables Grandma grows in her greenhouse.

Even though we call them Seven Herbs,
they aren't the official Seven Herbs of Spring,
but rather our family's original Seven Herbs,
made by gathering 7 types of
leafy vegetables growing at the time.
This is it.

[Kireido Seven Herbs 2024]
Bok choy
Spinach
Turnip greens
Komatsuna
Garland chrysanthemum
Rapeseed blossoms
Pea sprouts
This is what it looks like when you boil these 7 types of leafy vegetables.

Cut them into bite-sized pieces and divide them into individual plates.
Line up the 7 types,
and the preparation for the original Seven Herbs is complete.

This is where the Russian Roulette element comes in.
First, we make the lottery slips.

There is only one rule for the Leafy Green Roulette.
You must eat the leafy vegetable you draw in the lottery.
That's all there is to it.
You never know what you're going to get.
Even if you draw a leafy vegetable you don't like,
the fact that you have to eat it
is what makes it like Russian Roulette!
(Though I pretty much guessed what would happen)
Now, how will my vegetable-hating daughter react
to this strategy by her mother!?
Vegetable-hater ate them! Leafy Green Un-Roulette live report

As soon as I brought the lottery to the dining table,
my daughter said, "Hey, can I draw a slip already?"
She was super enthusiastic.
She drew a slip right away and got
"Turnip greens"
These are leafy greens that are easy to eat without any strong odor.
Mom: "Oh, this is a good one. Go ahead and try it."
Daughter: "I'll eat it!"
Nom nom nom
Daughter: "Can I draw again?"
This continued over and over again.

Even when she drew "garland chrysanthemum," which is unpopular with kids, halfway through,
Daughter: "It stinks!"
Even while saying that,
she seems to think that whatever she draws in the lottery is absolute,
so she even ate the garland chrysanthemum without leaving any behind.
She even gobbled up rapeseed blossoms,
which are a bit bitter and hard to eat.
I was surprised to see my daughter eating leafy greens she usually dislikes.
Even without any pressure from me as her mother,
thanks to the lottery system,
she ate them properly on her own.
Moreover, she seems to find the lottery itself fun,
and even after trying all the varieties,
she said things like, "Can I do it again?"
and kept repeating the process of drawing and eating.
The dream of endless leafy greens has been realized.
Leafy green eating fist technique unleashed!

I almost had them all eaten by my daughter
before I could put them in the seven-herb porridge.
The Leafy Green Un-Roulette
was more powerful than I imagined.
It's a huge hit in our house.

Today, I held this at home in line with the 2024 Seven Herbs festival.

Leafy Green Roulette
I introduced this.
It's just a lottery.
But it's a lottery nonetheless.
Just by adding a little playfulness to the dining table,
isn't it just wonderful
that it becomes this much fun?
All you need to prepare is the lottery.
Even children who hate vegetables can enjoy
eating them up.
Give Leafy Green Roulette a try!
