What to do? How to refer to a spouse? (The birth of a science-minded husband)
I have been struggling with how to refer to my spouse for about the last 10 years.
Let me roughly organize the ways to call them. I suppose it's about this many.
● Papa
● Shujin (Master/Husband)
● Danna (Husband/Master of the house)
● Partner
● By name
● Otto (Husband)
(I should note that the feelings I have for each of these words are personal.)
● When the children were small, "
Papa" was a universal word. But you are not my papa.●
Shujin You are not my master. You and I are a community of destiny, helping each other and living together. But it is convenient when talking to others. It also faintly carries the feeling of a wife who respects her husband.●
Danna
A bit casual. It gives the impression of being used like, "Hey, mister, won't you stop by?"
●Partner Something feels off. Maybe because it's a katakana word. It sounds perfect for the current era. Bridgestone reportedly removed "papa" and "mama" from the text of their "Childcare and Nursing Care Handbook" issued for employees and unified everything to "partner."
●
Otto This also feels just a little bit off. It feels like there is a hidden implication that a husband should be this way, and a wife should be that way. The convenience is unrivaled. As a word, it also feels well-settled.●
Name...
Impossible. Embarrassing.
Four years ago, I talked about how to refer to a spouse with the teacher at the writing school I was attending.
The teacher used "
tsureai" (companion)."Tsureai," huh...
Would people immediately realize this means spouse?
Wouldn't there be a delay in recognition of about 0.5 seconds?
It's a word with a slightly old-fashioned feel.
Some people express it in katakana as "
tsure" (companion). It was even in a book title.
But this is too light.
More sense of responsibility!
---
Because of that, in this notebook, when I started talking about my spouse, I used the katakana word "
OTTO
".
For clarity and being well-settled, "Otto" is number one.
It's my contrarian thinking that I don't want to use it as is.
---
However, a problem arose here.
None other than my spouse,
that science-minded person.
He saw the notebook and said this.
Science-minded person: "I'm not an otosei (fur seal)."
Atsuko: "Eh... I know, but why does it end up like that?"
Science-minded person: "You write 'otto' in katakana, right? And there's a piece of paper stuck to the right of it."
Atsuko: "Huh?"
Science-minded person: "Like this." (Writes on paper)

Science-minded person: "And when you remove this paper"

Science-minded person: "See, isn't it 'otosei'?
I am not a fur seal"
Atsuko: "Wait a minute. Speaking of 'otto'"

Atsuko: "You remove this paper, right? Then it's like this, isn't it?" (Writes)

Atsuko: "When you say 'otto', it's 'ottotto' (a snack), right?"
Science-minded person: "I am not a snack." (Very serious)

--------
I got completely fed up.
Atsuko: "Understood. I will use 'husband'."
And so,
not a "science-type fur seal"
and not a "science-type oopsie,"
"science-type husband"
was born.
No, no, no... I am
humbled to be writing this in such a note.
