Things I did gradually to reach 1,800 Twitter followers
It was the September before last when I started posting on Twitter,
after just watching from the sidelines for 10 years, and decided to give it a try.
Since around October of last year, I've been a bit more active,
such as by tweeting once every day and starting 'morning activities' where I post early in the morning.
To my surprise, today my followers exceeded 1,800!
I am very grateful.
I haven't been trying 'super hard' at it,
but I have been continuing at my own pace.
I think the following three things were effective.
1. One tweet a day through morning activities
On most days, I tweet between 5:00 and 8:00 AM.
If I have time, I type it on my computer the night before
and schedule the tweet.
It used to take me tens of minutes to think of one tweet,
but recently I've been able to cut down the time significantly.
Consistency is indeed power.
I am always surprised by how many people are active so early in the morning
when I do 'morning activities.' There are many positive and cheerful tweets.
Perhaps because I'm getting older, I've started waking up early,
so morning activities aren't that painful for me.
If you tend to wake up early in the morning, I recommend 'morning activities.'
You can get energy from everyone's passionate words.
2. Participate in appreciation events
When looking at the timeline,
you might see announcements saying,
'I'm holding an appreciation event to thank everyone for reaching ●● followers.'
I used to just scroll past them,
but when I finally decided to participate, I was surprised
that the notifications wouldn't stop.
I'm still not entirely sure how to participate,
but even so, there are times when over 20 people follow me in a single night,
and if I can manage it well, it seems like I could connect with quite a lot of people.
However, you should be prepared for a massive amount of notifications.
(Turning off notifications might be good, but you might miss out on a chance for interaction.)
3. Take the initiative with likes, replies, and follows
As the law of reciprocity suggests, if you want likes and follows,
it's best to give likes and follows yourself.
It is true that when you follow others yourself, many people
will follow you back.
The same goes for likes.
Liking and following are easy enough to do with a few taps, but
replies still feel like a high hurdle, and
I find myself writing, deleting, writing, and deleting them over and over.
However, I am happy when I receive a reply.
That is exactly why I want to become better at
replying to others as well.
Summary
The three points above are often cited as the basics of
increasing Twitter followers, and they are nothing unusual.
“Stick to the basics and take action every single day.”
That is all I have been doing.
I am not good at replying and struggle to do it well, but
Twitter is nothing without its followers.
I intend to keep going while enjoying the interactions.
Oh, and one thing to be careful of is
groups that say things like, “I’ll teach you an easy side hustle you can do just with your smartphone.”
They might send you DMs, but if you ignore them,
they will unfollow you and leave in no time.
Be careful about following just anyone and everyone.
Let’s keep tweeting while having fun.
