[New Series] Ambiguity Dictionary | Asking AI about ambiguous words every month (#01 Sport for All)
A series where I face “ambiguous words”, begins now.
Since I went to the trouble of setting up this note, I want to post as regularly as possible.
With that thought in mind, I decided to start a serial project “Ambiguity Dictionary | Asking AI about ambiguous words every month” .
While our era allows us to access information from all over the world via the internet, I also feel that because of the sheer volume of that information, it has become harder to reach “what I actually want to know”.
Furthermore, what makes this difficult is the fact that “information changes daily”.
What was considered correct yesterday is already updated today.
Sometimes, I feel like I cannot keep up with that speed.
I work at a sports think tank.
Once, a university professor said this to me.
“The definition of the ‘power’ that sports possess has changed.
In the past, it was a means for health and physical improvement, but
now it is attracting attention as a ‘power to solve social issues.’”
Beyond the content, I was interested in the point that “words and concepts change.”
Indeed, I think the nuances of words we often hear, such as ‘Sport for All,’ ‘well-being,’ ‘active city,’ and ‘social inclusion,’ have changed from what they used to be.
In this series, I decided to pick up one such word with a shifting meaning every month and
ask the AI a simple question.
My hypothesis is that because AI accesses vast amounts of information in real-time,
the “definition heard three months ago” and “today’s definition” should be different.
Through those changes, I would like to observe little by little how society is changing, and like a mirror reflecting that, how the AI is thinking.

share a ‘trigger’ for thinking.

Leaving the detailed history for another article, the term "Sport for All" began to spread in Europe in the 1970s. The background to this was that sports promotion until then had centered on competitive sports and initiatives for elite athletes, leading to a bias in "who could access sports" based on factors like age and gender.
The current AI definition includes words like "nationality," "presence or absence of disabilities," and "lifestyle." Perhaps the challenge for Sport for All today is that while the popularization of sports has progressed significantly, there are still people who are not yet able to enjoy them.
In the latter part, words like "coexistence" and "well-being" also appear. As the professor mentioned at the beginning, this may indicate that sports go beyond the simple purpose of health and are also useful for solving problems that society faces.
And, various people appear in the image. A person in a wheelchair racer, a woman wearing a hijab, a mother pushing a stroller, and so on. Everyone is enjoying sports (or perhaps it's closer to exercise) in their own way.
The perspective that there are diverse forms of participation in sports beyond just "doing", such as "watching" and "supporting", has also been incorporated into national sports policy. It would be interesting if images depicting such diverse ways of involvement were to appear in the future.
I said a word, but it ended up being long.
Just looking at the definitions and images that ChatGPT has put into words like this expands many thoughts.
In the future, I would like to try asking AI about other ambiguous terms, and also try asking about Sport for All again periodically to enjoy the changes.
