[Craftsman's Journal] Don't give up! Even a stuffed rabbit with a detached ear can be together with you again through Atdea's professional restoration
“I’ve been with it since I was a child, and the ear is about to come off...”
“My stuffed rabbit that I’ve had for years is damaged, but can it be fixed?”
We often receive inquiries like these. A stuffed animal filled with memories is not just an “object,” but a precious family member or treasure.
At “Atdea,” a specialist in high-end cleaning and repair, our craftsmen carefully restore your precious stuffed animals stitch by stitch by hand, without ruining their original character.
In this article, based on a case study of repairing a stuffed rabbit with a detached ear, we will introduce Atdea’s stuffed animal repair techniques, costs, and frequently asked questions.
What are the causes of “detached or torn ears” common in stuffed rabbits?
Parts of stuffed animals such as ears and legs are prone to fraying at the seam allowance due to pulling forces or aging, often leading to the following issues:
-
Fraying or tearing of the seam allowance (fabric) at the joint
Cases where the fabric in frequently moved or hugged areas becomes thin, causing the seams to unravel and the parts to detach.

-
Loss or shifting of stuffing
Cases where the neck or ears droop due to a decrease in stuffing at the base of the ears, putting strain on the root and causing them to detach.
-
Deterioration of the fabric itself (abrasion/holes)
Cases where years of friction leave insufficient “fabric margin” for sewing parts back together.
At Atdea, we don’t just sew back detached parts; we perform internal reinforcement and stuffing adjustment, considering both appearance and durability during the restoration.

The process of “ear detachment/fraying” repair performed by our craftsmen
1. Condition assessment and anatomical reinforcement
We check if the fabric at the detached part is torn and if reinforcement is necessary. If the fabric is weak, we apply reinforcement fabric (such as fusible interfacing) from the inside to increase the strength of the fabric itself.
2. Careful stitching by hand (hand-sewn restoration)
To maintain the subtle curves and expressions that cannot be achieved with a sewing machine, our craftsmen accurately sew along the original seams by “hand.”

3. Fine-tuning of expression and form
Even a slight change in the position or angle of the ears can significantly alter the expression of a stuffed animal. We finish the repair while adjusting the left-right balance so as not to lose the look it had before the restoration.

5 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Stuffed Animal Repair
Q1. Not only is the ear missing, but the fabric itself is torn and gone. Can it be fixed?
A. Yes, it can be restored.
We perform "transplant/patch repair" by reinforcing or adding fabric of a similar texture and color, or by applying reinforcement fabric from the inside and sewing it together. We will propose the optimal method to bring it as close to its original appearance as possible.
Q2. I'm worried that the atmosphere will change. Will it have its original expression?
A. We prioritize the familiar look and beloved form during restoration.
Referring to photos taken before repair, we carefully recreate the original position, angle, and fullness. We can also make adjustments according to your preferences, such as whether you want it "crisp like new" or "to retain the worn-in feel of many years of love."
Q3. Can I request only repairs without cleaning?
A. In principle, we recommend requesting it as a set with cleaning (or sanitizing/hand-washing).
This is because if you sew while years of sebum stains and dust remain, the fabric may be damaged by needle holes, and the causes of odors and dust mites will remain. We will carefully repair it by hand after ensuring it is in a clean state.
Q4. Can you handle old stuffed animals (vintage items) from the Showa or early Heisei eras?
A. Yes, we can.
Even for old stuffed animals whose fabric has become very delicate over time, we will gently restore them using specialized processes that do not cause damage, such as hand-washing with water and hand-sewn reinforcement.
Q5. How long does it take?
A. Usually, it takes about 3 weeks to 1 month from the time we receive it.
We take time to ensure a careful process, including cleaning, natural drying, hand-sewn repair by craftsmen, and inspection. Please consult with us in advance if you are in a hurry or have an event scheduled.
