STEP 3-1 Creating with Canva Custom Size

Today, we are finally opening Canva🙌😆✨️

From here on, it's the hands-on STEP!

As long as you do the calculations,

you won't have any trouble choosing the size in Canva!!

The first thing to do is very simple.

Even those who aren't good at math can do it!
Let's go through it in order😆‼️

Flow of creating a Kindle picture book

STEP 3

The size of the finished book we imagined last time

My format is
a square picture book
I will proceed with 8.5 inches x 8.5 inches‼️

As I said last time,
anything with a width exceeding 6 inches
is treated as a large format, you know🤭!!

But if the number of pages isn't high,
in terms of cost,
I know it doesn't really matter, so it's no problem!

Picture book to be created

・Format: Square
In the case of 8.5 inches x 8.5 inches

I'm going to decide the Canva setting size,
but I'll do the calculations first!

✅ ① Inches → cm

8.5 inches × 2.54 = 21.59 cm

✅ ② cm → mm

Since 1 cm = 10 mm,

21.59 cm × 10 = 215.9 mm

The trim size will be 👉 215.9mm × 215.9mm ☺️

Calculating the bleed size

A quick review ⭐️

What is bleed?

The part you extend beyond the edge
when you want color or background to go all the way to the edge.

This part is made with the assumption that it will be cut off!!

It's the "discard zone" 😚😚
Think of it like the crust on a sandwich 😁👍

When making a paperback,
we calculate the bleed
so that the color reaches the edge properly
even if it gets cut during the binding process!

Add 3.2mm to the top, bottom, left, and right!!

✅ Bleed calculation

Finished size: 215.9mm
Add 3.2mm to top, bottom, left, and right

3.2mm × 2 (left and right) = 6.4mm

215.9 + 6.4 = 222.3mm

222.3mm × 222.3mm

This will be the Canva setting size for your project.

Now, finally,

let's open Canva!!

So, what shall we design? 😍

Let's start from the creation screen! 😆😆

If you scroll down,
you will see something called Custom Size,

so please click on that!!

Before entering the numbers we calculated earlier,
let's fix the units!
Change px to mm!

Then,
enter the calculated numbers into the width and height fields!

Click Create new design!!

The blank canvas for your picture book
has finally been created

inside Canva! 😆🙌✨

The canvas is complete! ✨️

Isn't that great? 😁✨

Look for the three dots in the blue bar,
try tapping there!

If you press the pencil button on the far right,
you can change the design name. ☺️

If you have already decided on a picture book title,
enter the title.
If you haven't decided yet,
I recommend naming it something like
'8.5-inch with bleed picture book'
so you know what size it is when you look at it later. ☺️

※The following steps are optional!
I included them to help you visualize it!!

In the case of the
8.5-inch x 8.5-inch picture book I plan to create,

since the picture book size is large,
when I checked the bleed,
it was thin enough that it didn't bother me much!

If you make the finished picture book size smaller,
the condition of adding 3.2mm to the top, bottom, left, and right
for the bleed area does not change,

so when I checked the bleed area,
it felt like a larger portion would be cut off.

Please remember that no matter what size you create it in,
paperbacks
always have a bleed area.
😆🙌

In the case of A5 square size,
even with the same bleed width,
it looks like more of the area gets trimmed off.😉
