My Mother's Words
My 86-year-old mother currently lives in a residential nursing home.
To be honest, my sister, my cousin, and I are glad she is in a facility.
When she lived at home, she fell so often that I lost count of how many times we had to call an ambulance...
Every time that happened, her doctor would tell us, "It is not safe for her to live alone" and "
You should consider a facility." Even though she was told this, my mother would always come up with excuses to refuse. However, following a hospitalization due to a fall last year, she spent three months in a geriatric health services facility,
and after that, she moved to her current residential home...
It has been about four months since she moved in, but she still says things like,
"
This place is no good,""
Since coming here, I can't even lift my arms well or get dressed properly,""
They only give me a little bit of physical therapy,""
Even when I go to day service, they don't do any physical therapy! I'm just sitting there the whole time!" ...and so on.
She grumbles to me, but she acts all charming toward the caregivers and seems unable to ask them the things she wants to know, saying things like, "
What's going on with my physical therapy?
You! Didn't you listen properly to what they said?."
Even when I say, "Mom, you were there when they explained it, weren't you?" she replies,"I have trouble hearing, so you're supposed to listen for me!
💢"and so on... whenever I say anything, she just says, "My hearing is bad
" or "I don't understand"...
One of the things I have to do early this year
is take her to an ENT clinic for a hearing test and to have her hearing aid adjusted.
I wonder what my mother will say once that is done...
