♪ The story of how I fell in love with that song and called the manufacturer.
“Good morning♪”
As I was brewing coffee this morning, just like any other day, a nostalgic melody suddenly crossed my mind♪
Is there a “CM song” that captured your heart in an instant?
For me, it was that crystal-clear singing voice from a Nescafe commercial over 20 years ago.
“More than you〜 imagine〜♪
The world is〜 even more wonderful〜♪”
Every time this song played on TV,
“Wow, that’s so cool!”
my heart would feel light,
and I couldn't help but look forward to those few seconds of commercial time.
“I just have to hear the whole song…!”
Nowadays, you could solve that in seconds with a quick search on your smartphone, but back then, even looking things up on the internet was a struggle.
But I just couldn't give up, so I took a bold step.
Believe it or not, I actually called Nestle (it was called Nestle back then!) directly!
Thinking back on it now, that was quite a bit of initiative, wasn't it? (laughs)
To the representative on the phone,
I poured my heart out, feeling so nervous,
telling them how wonderful the song was.
“Um, excuse me, who is the person singing that song?”
“Is there a CD available for purchase?”
The answer I got back was...
“The singer is Ryoko Goto. But unfortunately, there are no plans to release it on CD.”
“Oh no, it’s such a wonderful song, that’s such a waste. I really think you should make a CD. If you do, I’ll definitely buy it.”
After saying things like that,
along with feeling a little disappointed,
I thought, 'Yes! My feelings about the song must have been conveyed!'
I remember that my first-ever action like this was surprisingly fun.
However...!
A few months later, while I was casually browsing at a CD shop, I almost let out a shout of “What!?”
Lined up on the shelf was the very thing I was told had “no plans” for release,
a CD by Ryoko Goto!
“What! Why! No way! That’s amazing!!”I did a fist pump in my heart.Of course, I bought it immediately without hesitation. At that moment, I suddenly thought:
I’m sure I wasn't the only one who nervously called Nestle that day to share my love for it.
There must have been other “fans” like me all over the country,
and everyone’s passionate voices must have moved the manufacturer’s heart.
When I thought about that, I felt filled with a proud and happy feeling, as if I had become part of a big project.
Time has passed, and now I don't even have a CD player on hand.
But now, with just a tap of my finger, I can hear that song “Open Up” on YouTube.
It’s become such a convenient world, hasn't it? (laughs)
The moment the intro plays, the nervous excitement of when I made that call and my life back then come back vividly.
This morning, while reflecting on my past self, I listened to it on repeat over and over again.
The lyrics are also wonderful.
“Cast off the self you were until yesterday, and start to shine.”

I hope that for all of you, today will be as light and wonderful as a melody♪
