3 Ways to Give Compliments That Resonate with Customers [Reason, Question, Repetition]
Yesterday, I posted an article titled "If you want to be good at giving compliments, stop trying so hard."
Before you get desperate about "having to compliment the customer," it is important to polish your ability to find things to compliment = the wonderful aspects of the customer—that is what I talked about.
Here it is ↓↓
Now then, today is a continuation of yesterday's complimenting skills.
I'm sure many of you have the concern, "I've found things to compliment the customer on, but how should I actually go about it?"
I will share three points on how to give compliments that resonate with customers' hearts.
I would be happy if you could read this along with yesterday's article.
□ 3 Ways to Give Compliments That Resonate with Customers
[Reason, Question, Repetition]
1. Increasing credibility by stating a "reason"
If you only say "That looks great on you!", "That's wonderful!", or "That's cute!", the customer might doubt you, thinking, "Do you really mean it?!" However, if you add a reason, the credibility of your words will increase significantly.
For example, add
"It looks great on you because you have fair skin"
, or some other reason why you thought it looked good.
This conveys that you aren't just complimenting them randomly, but that you are actually paying attention, so try pairing your compliments with a reason.
2. Increasing favorability by asking a "question"
For example, if you say,
"This bag is wonderful! By the way, where did you buy it?"
, showing interest in the thing (or matter) you complimented makes it easier for the customer to feel favorably toward you.
This is because people tend to feel a sense of closeness toward those who show interest in them or their personal preferences.
"Compliment + Question" can make subsequent conversations flow more easily and serves as a trigger to shorten the distance between you.
3. Conveying sincerity by repeating
By repeating a compliment a few times rather than just once, it becomes easier to convey your sincerity, making them think, "They really do mean it!"
The key to repeating is to leave a little time before saying it again.
For example, suppose you complimented them once by saying,
"This bag is wonderful."
Then, after a little while, say it again quietly:
"It really is wonderful."
The idea is to convey the feeling of, "It's so wonderful that I can't help but say it multiple times!"
If you feel resistant to complimenting the same thing multiple times, it is also okay to add a phrase like, "Sorry for saying it so many times."
□ Summary
Points for giving compliments that delight customers:
1. State a reason
2. Add a question
3. Repeat the compliment
Becoming good at giving compliments is useful not only in customer service but also in human relationships with workplace colleagues and in communication at home.
Please give them a try.
Thank you for reading until the end.
