Empress Suiko's Kusurigari (Medicinal Herb Hunting)
The Nihon Shoki contains a record (from 611) that Empress Suiko went medicinal herb hunting in Akino, in the present-day Uda region. This is the earliest recorded instance of medicinal herb hunting in our country that can be confirmed through historical documents.
Medicinal herb hunting was a court event where it is said that men would collect deer antlers, which have high medicinal value, and women would pick medicinal herbs.
It is said that when Empress Suiko intended to go hunting for game, Prince Shotoku (Prince Umayado) remonstrated with her, suggesting that she follow the Chinese custom and go medicinal herb hunting instead, a suggestion which she accepted.
Since this took place on the 5th day of the 5th month in 611, it was established as the Tango no Sekku, or the Day of Medicine.
Today is also a day to join our hands in prayer and express gratitude to our predecessors🙏🌱

As Prince Shotoku said,
medicinal substances are essential for nourishing the people, and we must keep in mind that they should never be handled in a way that harms the mind and body.
