[AMMON TOKYO] Nozomu Shinohara Laboratory: Kiln-ing. II

AMMON TOKYO and WADA GAROU TOKYO Lab. are pleased to present the solo exhibition "Nozomu Shinohara Laboratory: Kiln-ing. II" by ceramic artist Nozomu Shinohara, starting Friday, December 1, 2023.
Based in the pottery town of Shigaraki, Shinohara primarily uses an anagama (tunnel kiln) he built himself, pursuing contemporary wood-firing techniques that bring out the inherent charm of ceramic clay. His captivating creative activities, which utilize materials from the fertile earth, have transcended borders; in 2019, he participated in workshops and train kiln firings at Stanford University and Utah State University. Through his experience encountering diverse perspectives abroad, he has come to share the fundamental appeal of clay with the world, moving beyond traditional approaches to ceramics.

Train Kiln: A wood-fired kiln developed in 1998 by John Neely, a professor and ceramic artist at Utah State University in the United States. The name is derived from its resemblance to a steam locomotive.

In this exhibition, continuing from last year, we reconstruct and assemble all the elements of Shinohara's creative process: "clay, temperature, location (inside the kiln), kiln, and forming." The exhibition is themed as an "exploratory display" where the venue is likened to a laboratory (or the inside of a kiln), allowing visitors to discover the appeal of the works while viewing pieces created under different conditions. By comparing the two venues, which have completely different atmospheres, visitors can enjoy the differences in how the works are perceived. The works reflect Shinohara's passion to date, and you will be able to see their truly diverse and beautiful aspects. Please come closer and take a look. We look forward to your visit.

The two sandbags in the center of the photo: The one on the left, with the fire-colored tea bowl, contains Kise clay, while the one on the right, with the shinogi (fluted) tea bowl, contains clay the artist himself obtained permission to mine. It is characterized by its high iron content and lumpy texture, and Shinohara calls this clay "N".

ARTIST STATEMENT
The pure white clay of Shigaraki and Iga is subjected to the high heat of a wood-fired kiln called an "anagama."
The clay and ash melt as if biting into each other,
carbon stains the body black, or burns through to create a red fire color,
forming various landscapes of kiln transformation.

What happens with the simple combination of "clay and anagama"?
"There is a secret in the anagama."
I approach every kiln firing with the feeling of conducting an experiment.
