The job I chose by process of elimination, and the true nature of the 'emptiness' that wouldn't go away.
I returned from Taiwan during the latter part of the COVID-19 pandemic.
I received a sudden transfer order in mid-December and was back in Japan by early February.
After experiencing a 7-day quarantine, my life in Japan resumed in a whirlwind.
My freelance days, when I wrote code all night
Not wanting to waste what I had studied so hard for in Taiwan, I stubbornly sent out hundreds of sales emails after returning home.
Thanks to that effort, I was able to get work, but studying and practical application were two completely different things.
“How should I write this to express this design...?”
(*Coder: A job that involves rewriting designs into a language computers can read to build them into websites)
I didn't know how to do it. But time passed, and deadlines loomed.
Driven by anxiety and tension, I often worked through the night.
But that was a path I chose by process of elimination because I 'had no choice but to work with just a computer.' Now that I'm back in Japan, it doesn't have to be this job.
Once my motivation was gone, the version of me that had been so desperate was nowhere to be found.
My part-time life, where I told myself, 'This is fine for now'
After that, I decided to work part-time at a company I had connected with during my freelance days. It was a job involving administrative tasks and writing simple code.
I worked on set days and at set times.
My income dropped significantly, but my mind and body felt surprisingly at ease.
“My child is still in kindergarten, so this is fine for now.” I told myself that, and I thought I had come to terms with it.
The rekindled desire to 'decide my own life for myself'
However, after a year passed, that 'emptiness' began to drift into those days as well.
The work itself was fun, and I was truly grateful to receive work without having to solicit it myself. But as an employee, I faced sudden changes in direction that altered my assigned tasks, and I could see the limits to how much my hourly wage could increase.
“Is this how my life is going to end, working part-time?”
When those thoughts piled up, that feeling I had during my time in Taiwan surfaced once again.
I want to judge and decide my own life for myself! I want to live!
I want to live feeling more fulfillment and purpose.
I don't want to leave it to someone else; I want to stand on my own two feet.
It's been a long story, but looking back, this entire sequence of events led to my decision to 'start a business.'
But from there, 'Why fragrance?' That is something I will talk about in the next article.
