I have been asked to serve as a judge this time and will do my best to help out.
I received a double grand prize with Ayuta-san at the Autumn Izayoi Cup, but since even my work can be chosen, you never know what will happen at the Everyone's Haiku Tournament ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶
Of course, there are haiku teachers and those who enjoy haiku, but the Everyone's Haiku Tournament is a tournament where everyone can participate freely and enjoy themselves, so if you think of something, please go ahead and write a haiku and submit it!
I started writing haiku at the first Apollo Cup last summer. After that, the White Cup, Sasa Cup, Space Cup, Tsurukame Cup, and Izayoi Cup—this upcoming Polar Bear Cup will be my seventh.
What everyone who has participated in the haiku tournament says is that they were happy to receive feedback on their haiku.
I have also heard many people say that they had more comment exchanges with other noters they hadn't interacted with before, and were able to empathize and share their thoughts.
I think the best part is the feeling of trying to create what you want to write freely.
When people hear 'haiku tournament,' they might think the hurdle is high or that you have to study before participating, but this tournament started with the idea that everyone can just enjoy it together, and I think it is very meaningful that this spirit has been carried on.
I am full of gratitude to those who enjoy haiku or are already well-versed in it for generously teaching me various things.
At first, I would write haiku that were like slogans with three-part breaks, but gradually I learned seasonal words, and was taught about avoiding double seasonal words, avoiding the 'naka-hachi' (middle eight syllables), and using 'kireji' (cutting words).
This time, too, it's a loose framework where you can write winter-themed poems, with or without seasonal words. Keeping your antenna up for daily life and memories, and writing your favorite poem when you feel like it—that is the best way.
Past glory, age, and occupation don't matter there; it's about sharing what you feel right here and now, and instead of correcting, it's about empathizing and sharing thoughts. I hope it will be that kind of tournament again.
