Alphabet Monsters Design Notes u / U

What are Alphabet Monsters?

"Alphabet Monsters" is an original educational material that designs uppercase and lowercase letters as Pokémon-like characters.
By utilizing the shape of the letters as monster silhouettes, we have designed them so that children can enjoy getting familiar with the alphabet.
As a design note, I will write about the behind-the-scenes of the production.

The "U" shape that attracts with magnetic force

When I looked at the shapes of "u" and "U", I decided on a "U-shaped magnet" without hesitation. It is familiar to both children and adults, and the setting of using the mysterious power of magnetism is easy to understand and interesting as a character.

By the way, it seems that in English-speaking countries, it is generally called a "horseshoe magnet".

u (Yuji)

The lowercase "u" is a simple magnet motif with a gray body and red and blue accents on the ends.

I utilized the shape of the letter as it is, including the "protrusion" on the bottom right, and it didn't feel out of place at all. For the personality, I imagined a "mischievous child" who goes around sticking various things together with magnetic force, so I gave it a slightly naughty expression. The name is "Yuji," taken from the letter "U".

U (Ugnet)

The uppercase "U" is a type that is divided into red and blue on the left and right. In contrast to the small Yuji, this is a slightly higher-ranking existence that floats in the air in a huge form.

For the face, I chose a design that combines friendliness and mystery, like a clown mask. On both ends, I added the letters "N" and "S" to indicate the magnetic poles.

I named it "Ugnet" by combining "U" and "magnet".

The joy of giving shape to intuition

The "u" and "U" became a very straightforward pair, with the design completed just as the shape of the letters guided me. I would be happy if the relationship between the two, connected by magnetic force, is conveyed through the design.

If you like, it would be encouraging if you could like or follow me.
It would be great if you could comment on your child's reaction, etc.✨
