Part 7 | Why Kindness Turns into "Fatigue." 3 Steps to Protect Your Mental Energy
After meeting people, when you get home,
don't you have days where you feel suddenly exhausted?
Even though you've gotten into bed,
for some reason, today's conversation keeps repeating in your head.
You start worrying about a trivial remark or expression from the other person later,
and a quiet "self-reflection meeting" begins.
"Did I say something weird?"
"Did I make them feel uncomfortable?"
A night where only your heart feels restless like that.
That is not because you are weak, but
a sign that your "kindness sensor" was working too hard and your heart was depleted.🌿
The kinder you are, the more you might
unconsciously "bring home" someone else's vibe or emotions.
It is not that you are weak,
but that you have a high reception sensitivity.
Empathy Fatigue: When Kindness Turns into Depletion
Here, I will first put the "mechanism" into words.
The kinder you are, the more naturally you receive the other person's feelings and changes in the atmosphere.
(People with HSP traits, in particular, may have this high "reception sensitivity".)
However, when it turns into fatigue—
it is often because you couldn't let go of what you received on the spot and
left it inside your heart. When your reception sensitivity is high, events that should have ended on the spot do not end in your heart.
You receive the other person's expressions and atmosphere as "information," and
unconsciously—
take it on, carry it, and adjust for it.
That is why the fatigue comes later. For example, unconsciously,
taking on the other person's anxiety as your own
returning home while still holding the tension of that situation in your body
continuing to make adjustments in your head to "keep things smooth"
When these three overlap,
even though your "kindness" remains the same,
your mental energy is the first thing to be depleted.
I call this state empathy fatigue.
So in this part,
before "trying not to care," we will
set the order for protecting your mental energy🌿
3 Steps to Protect Your Mental Energy
Today's 3 steps are just these.
Loosen your reception(to the "here and now" through breathing)
Reclaim your boundaries(don't bring it home)
Return your consciousness inward(put down what you brought home)
Returning your consciousness inward means that when you have "brought home" someone else's atmosphere or emotions,
you gently put them down from within yourself and return your breathing and senses to yourself🌿
🌿 "Return your consciousness inward" in 30 seconds
Right here, right now, just for 30 seconds.
Let's return your consciousness, which was directed outward, back inward🌿
1) Relax your shoulders
2) Exhale "longer" (focus on exhaling rather than inhaling)
3) In your heart, just one word
"I am returning to myself."
That is enough for now.
If you would like to settle things a little more,
the next step is 3 minutes.
We will gently set down the things you have "brought home with you."
🌿 A 3-minute exercise to "set down what you brought home"
Gently set down and let go of the atmosphere or emotions you have brought home with you.
You can use paper or a note on your smartphone.
Take one slow, deep breath out.
1) What did you bring home with you today?
(e.g., anxiety / tension / guilt / impatience)
2) Is it really "yours"?
→ If you can think, "Maybe it belongs to someone else," that is fine.
3) Finally, say this in your heart:
"This does not belong to me."
"I am returning to my inner self."
Once you finish saying it, exhale for a long time.
It is enough to just reach the point where your shoulders relax 🌿
Summary of today
On days when kindness feels burdensome, it is not because you are weak, but simply because your reception sensitivity is high.
It turns into fatigue because you are still carrying the atmosphere or emotions you brought home.
So, rather than "not worrying," adjust yourself in this order: loosen your reception → restore your boundaries → return your focus inward 🌿
If you were able to return to yourself today, that is enough. Aloha 🌺
If there is a day when it is difficult to settle yourself alone,
I provide a "Mental Compass (Mini Position Check Version)" and a 3-minute audio clip via LINE for days when you feel lost 🌿
