3 Ways to Increase Parent-Child Conversation While Cooking
🧸 Welcome to Mom's 'Relatable' Coffee Break.
Please take it easy today too ☕✨️
The kitchen in the evening is,
you're using the stove, you're short on time, and
don't you get 'Mom!' and 'Hey, listen to this!' happening all at once? 😇🍳
I often,
while shaking the frying pan,
end up saying, 'Wait, just a second!!'
and then have a self-reflection session later... 💦
But one day,
my son (in middle nursery school) came to the kitchen,
and the moment he asked, 'What are you doing?',
I suddenly realized something.
Huh?
Is the 'time spent cooking',
actually a huge opportunity for conversation...? 🤔✨
Since I started trying a few things,
the kitchen has changed from a tense space
into a 'chat spot' 🍳💛
3 ways to increase conversation while cooking 🥕🌈
1. Become a 'Play-by-Play Mom' 📣✨
'I'm going to cut the onion now!'
'Can you hear the sizzling sound!?'
When I give a play-by-play, for some reason the kids react 😂
My daughter (3rd grade) gets involved, saying 'I know that one!'
2. Make it a 'Single-Choice Question' ❓👉
Instead of 'How was your day?',
'Was today's school lunch a winner?'
'What was the funniest thing at school?'
'Short questions' that are easy to answer even while cooking are best ◎
It keeps the conversation from stalling 🍀
3. Give them a little help with a "job title" 🍅🧑🍳
“Salad duty, please!”
“Mixing specialist, reporting for duty!”
Just by giving them a job title,
my son's excitement skyrockets 😂✨
and conversation naturally increases.
A treat to make kitchen time a little more fun 🍬
🍓Cavendish & Harvey Mixed Fruit Drops Glass Jar
Even before you open the lid, it lifts your spirits ✨
It's a jar packed with nostalgic-tasting candies
in a stylish glass container 🍓🍋🍊
The colorful, rounded appearance
makes it a great piece of decor just by sitting on the kitchen counter or shelf 💡
Asking, “Which one will you pick?”
can also be a trigger for a little parent-child chat while cooking.
It's perfect as a small reward for a hard day,
a candy that's fun to look at and fun to choose 🍬💛
When you're cooking,
it's okay if you can't give them your full attention.
Being in the same space, smelling the same smells,
and exchanging a few words is enough 🍲💕
It doesn't have to be a perfect conversation.
Even while keeping an eye on a hamburger steak that's about to burn,
that time is still quality “parent-child time” ☺️
And above all...
by the time the cooking is done,
I've found that the days where I think, “We talked a lot today,” have increased ☕✨
