AI Ethics Advocates Who Left Google
Hinton, Whittaker, and Gebru all share the commonality of having once worked at Google. Analyzing and speculating on AI ethics concerns regarding Google from this perspective, the following points can be raised.
Issues of Bias and Discrimination
Google's AI technology is used in many products, such as search engines, image recognition, and translation services, but these systems sometimes harbor bias and discrimination (Source: Wired). Timnit Gebru pointed out racial and gender biases in image recognition technology and was working to resolve these issues within Google, but her dismissal raised concerns that research on AI ethics is not being sufficiently accepted.
Risks of Misuse of AI Technology
Google may use AI technology for military or surveillance purposes. For example, Google participated in "Project Maven," a joint project with the U.S. Department of Defense, but this project involved developing AI technology to assist with drone surveillance and attacks, and it faced strong protests from both inside and outside the company (Source: Vice). There are concerns that such projects increase the risk of AI technology being misused.
Lack of a Free Research Environment for Developers and Researchers
It has been reported that Google's AI researchers sometimes face restrictions or pressure when publishing research results that could affect corporate profits. The dismissal of Timnit Gebru and the departure of Meredith Whittaker have cast doubt on Google's stance on accepting critical research regarding AI ethics (Source: Wired).
Lack of Platform Transparency and Accountability
The internal algorithms of AI systems developed and operated by Google are mostly undisclosed. This makes it opaque how AI systems operate and what data they base their results on. This lack of transparency can lead to issues of fairness and accountability, and may cause AI technology to generate discrimination and prejudice (Source: Bloomberg).
Lack of Balance Between Corporate Profit and Social Responsibility
To maximize advertising revenue, Google utilizes AI technology to analyze user behavior and provide targeted advertisements. However, such an approach can raise concerns regarding user privacy and data protection. Furthermore, the pursuit of corporate profit may come at the expense of social responsibility and efforts toward AI ethics (Source: Daily Dot).
While I have used examples of key former Google researchers here, a similar phenomenon is occurring simultaneously across GAFAM. What they have in common is a passionate interest in AI ethics. These phenomena suggest that in order to address AI ethics issues, it is important to adopt a more transparent and comprehensive approach and to create an environment where researchers and developers can conduct research freely. By resolving these concerns, we can contribute to the sustainable and fair development of AI technology.
