Minimum 20,000 Leagues | Weekly Short-Short Note
It started with a trivial argument over a cherry blossom branch that had grown over the fence.
Mr. K wrote an apology letter to his neighbor, Mr. L.
However, under the Revised Postal Law, it is considered unfair unless the delivery travels at least "20,000 leagues," which is more than fifty times around the Earth.
The envelope was sucked into a massive space post box, left lunar orbit, circled Mars and Jupiter, and was registered for the shortest course returning via a space elevator.
The duration was ten years, and the fee was 300 credits.
The postal clerk boasted that it was cheaper than a human round trip.
During those ten years, the Earth's population shifted due to redevelopment, and addresses became numbers. Mr. K also sold his house and moved into the house next door.
And ten years later—
A silver drone descended to the entrance of the former K residence and carefully delivered the envelope.
The sender was himself, the addressee was "Mr. L," and the recipient was the current Mr. K.
When he opened the envelope, there was one line of scribbled text.
"I have moved. To next door."
Mr. K sighed, closed the envelope, and pressed the post button.
The space post box roared again, charging the travel fee for a minimum of 20,000 leagues.
An apology is a long way off.
