We live in an era where we have the easiest access to "information" in human history, yet at the same time, we live in an era where "truth" is harder to see than ever before. When faced with these, we tend to jump to solutions like "let's improve individual literacy" or "let's tighten fact-checking." However, the monumental work The Misinformation Age: How False Beliefs Spread by Cailin O’Connor and James Owen Weatherall coldly points out that such intuitive measures may actually be missing the essence of the problem.
The authors use a new framework called "Network Epistemology," which fuses game theory and network science, to argue that misinformation spreads not because individuals have low intelligence, but because the "social learning system" we rely on has inherent structural vulnerabilities.
