[Essay for Aspiring Novelists] I cannot even write about myself completely.
What were you thinking about just before you started reading this essay? What has moved you recently, and what have you been worrying about?
I just encountered someone using the phrase "ichiren takusho" (sharing the same fate) in conversation for the first time, so I looked up its meaning on the internet. It is a Buddhist term that means sharing the same outcome or destiny. After learning that, I suddenly remembered a psychological test I saw on a TV show a long time ago. In that test, you first come up with two four-character idioms that pop into your head in order. (Please try it if you'd like before reading on.)
Did you think of them?
By the way, I thought of 1) "isseki nicho" (killing two birds with one stone) and 2) "ichigo ichie" (once-in-a-lifetime encounter).
The first four-character idiom you wrote down is said to be the phrase you value most in life. The second is said to be the phrase you value most in love.
I see, that makes sense. I have a habit of being greedy and reaching for everything, so "killing two birds with one stone" fits. Also, I value my encounters with people regardless of who they are, so I thought "once-in-a-lifetime encounter" was also accurate. How about you all?
After remembering that, since I write on Note every day, I remembered I hadn't written today's post yet, worried about what to write, and decided to just start writing aimlessly about what I'm thinking right now.
Writing up to this point has taken a little over 10 minutes, and 10 minutes is enough time to run nearly 2 kilometers if you try hard, or in baseball, to play one inning of three up, three down at a good tempo.
What I want to say is that it is impossible to organize and write down everything I do, think, feel, and so on, in a way that is fully conveyed to others. I want to express and write about everything regarding myself, but I know that I absolutely cannot write it all, so I have to make choices and accept that I must give some things up.
I thought this was the same in daily communication. It is said that we naturally choose words that sound like us to talk about the events that happen to us and about ourselves. And we do it in a way that is convenient for us, too. After all, we want to make ourselves look good.
But once you know that, strangely enough, communication becomes lighter. I cannot express everything about myself, and the other person cannot express everything about themselves either. Therefore, there is no need to force yourself to show off or belittle yourself, and there is no need to treat the other person with arrogance or look down on them.
Well, only I can understand myself (and sometimes, even I cannot grasp myself), and I cannot completely understand the other person's feelings (though that doesn't mean I should forget to be considerate), so I guess it feels like I've let go of some strange attachments.
