Those Little Ones in the Sky
When I was a child,
koinobori (carp streamers) were
not just decorations.
When the wind blew,
they would suddenly come to life,
puffing out their bellies,
looking like giant creatures
trying to head up into the sky.
They were so big it was almost scary,
but somehow, it made me happy.
"Hey, look!"
This is a Children's Day poem
that sounds like you can hear that voice.
Those Little Ones in the Sky
aco
Floating
in the sky,
those very big
little ones.
Usually,
they are limp,
quietly
lying flat
like that.
But
today,
they are amazing.
So very
energetic,
so very
big.
They are eating
lots of
wind.
With their bellies
puffed out full.
Flap, flap,
flap, flap.
It's almost
a little scary.
If I don't
watch them properly,
they might go off
on an adventure
somewhere.
No, no,
they're mine!
You guys
are the most energetic.
More, more,
more, more.
Showing off
in the sky.
My pride and joy.
Hey,
look!

Afterword
Carp streamers,
they look a little lonely on windless days,
but the moment the wind blows,
I feel like they suddenly become living creatures.
When I was a child,
that felt truly mysterious,
and truly amazing.
Just by having a big carp streamer
flapping in the sky,
I felt like I myself
had become stronger.
"Our carp streamer is the most energetic."
"Mine is the biggest."
That kind of feeling,
where you can puff out your chest without any reason at all.
We forget it when we become adults, but,
in the sky back then,
perhaps my friends were really swimming there.
Eating the wind,
with their bellies puffed out full,
my pride and joy,
looking like they might fly off somewhere.
This year again,
I hope someone's little "Hey, look!"
can be heard under the sky.
