Night Firefly Walk

I went to see fireflies over the weekend.

When I looked it up, the conditions were perfect.

They say a night with little moonlight, little wind, and a bit of humidity is best.

There was a very thin moon out that night.

My husband and I walked timidly along a dark, deserted road.

Thinking, "I wonder if anyone else is coming to see them, or if there are even any fireflies here?"

Oh! A group of parents and children came from the other direction!

Maybe they were having an observation session? My anxiety blew away, and my expectations suddenly soared.

Ah! It flashed!

Something seemed to flash in the grass. Was it a firefly? Half-doubting, we headed down toward the stream.

There they were!

Fireflies flying while glowing with a soft, slow, flickering light.

They were flying quite high up.

Wow.

As we stood still for a while, several of them would light up at once, or fly right past us.

Here they come, here they come!

My husband is whispering excitedly a little way off.

Pointing to his chest, he says, "I thought it was coming close, and then it landed right here!"

Thinking how wonderful it is that one landed on his chest, I asked him what it felt like.

He replied, "It felt like my soul was being sucked out. 😰"

I thought, "Whoa, like a Dementor? 😱" but that's how he felt.

When we moved before, my husband had his toe bitten by a gecko while he was sleeping.

I wonder if he gets baptized by the local creatures whenever we move?

Since he's close to animals, maybe there's something to it.

My husband didn't seem that interested at first, but once the fireflies started glowing, he got excited and kept filming them.

I was debating whether or not to go see them, but I'm glad I did!

As adults, we tend to think, "I already know what that's like, so I don't need to see it," and talk ourselves out of things, but experiencing something new is still thrilling and exciting.

It was a fun night that reminded me how important it is to not be lazy and just give things a try.

Oh, that's right, I encountered a squirrel on my morning walk. I probably wouldn't have noticed it if it hadn't been walking on the power lines.

I can't believe I can see fireflies and squirrels at my new place.

Actually, I had wanted to move further away from the city, but it seems like it's a more peaceful place than I thought.

My wish to live in a quiet place has been unexpectedly fulfilled.

While I was looking for images of fireflies, I found something that looked like Hiiro-san's work!
It really was Hiiro-san! 😆
