Two Umbrellas | Polar Bear Literature Club
Taking shelter from the rain was part of our dates before we were married.
When caught in a sudden downpour, we would run together to the nearest eaves.
At most, we only ever had one umbrella between us.
We would wait for the rain to stop, standing close enough for our shoulders to touch.
I used to wish it would just keep raining.
Now, we each have a folding umbrella in our bags.
Even if it rains, we don't run for cover anymore.
We open our own umbrellas and walk our separate ways.
Today, we walked home from the station together.
It started to rain, and he opened his umbrella.
I opened mine, too.
Two umbrellas swayed separately.
"We didn't have umbrellas back then, did we?"
I said with a reminiscent smile.
He replied while still looking ahead.
"If we had, we wouldn't have taken shelter from the rain."
I am participating in Kosuke Komaki's Polar Bear Literature Club.
