Stop Asking the Impossible | Amano Writing Club

"Hey, why don't you confess your feelings tomorrow?" my friend Mai said at the izakaya.

I took a sip of beer from my mug and let out a sigh.

"Stop asking the impossible."
"It's not impossible. That guy is definitely interested in you."

The "guy" Mai was referring to was Tanaka-san from the sales department at our company.

But I had never looked at Tanaka-san in that way.
"I don't really like Tanaka-san, you know."
I said honestly.

Mai swallowed her words for a moment.

Then, with a wry smile, she said,
"Oh, really? Then why are you two so close?"
"We're just talking like normal colleagues."

Mai tilted her mug.

"I see." Her voice, as she muttered this, was a mix of relief and sadness.

I have known for a long time.

Mai's voice goes up a little when she talks about Tanaka.
When Tanaka is nearby, Mai's gaze follows him.

But she will never say it herself.
And yet, she tells me, "You should confess to him."

I know that even though she always acts tough and plays the bad girl, she is actually a little timid and kind.

Maybe she thinks that if I date Tanaka, she will be able to give up on him.

Before I could finish saying, "Mai, listen," she spoke first.

"I'm thinking of changing jobs."
"Huh?"
"I'm just a little tired of my current company."

Mai's smile was stiff.

Perhaps Mai is trying to run away from her own feelings.

I said,
"Stop asking the impossible, and tell him how you really feel."

Mai remained silent for a while, staring at her empty beer mug.

"That, in itself, is asking the impossible."
Saying that, Mai gave a small, lonely smile.
