Weekly Short-Short Prompt: "Mont Blanc Gaffe"
She gazes dreamily at the cakes lined up in the display case.
"They all look so delicious, but since it's autumn, I think I'll go with the Mont Blanc!"
"Yeah, the one at this shop looks good with the marron glacé on top."
"Isn't that obvious, since it's a Mont Blanc?"
"Hahaha, that's certainly the strong image of it in Japan, but 'Mont Blanc' doesn't actually mean 'chestnut cake.' It means 'white mountain' in French, and it's a cake modeled after an actual mountain in the Alps."
I ordered two of the Mont Blancs she chose, along with a shortcake and a homemade pudding.
“Overseas, chestnut paste is often used for the base or outer decoration of the cake, and putting a chestnut on top is a uniquely Japanese style. It started as a good luck charm based on the term 'kachi-guri' (victory chestnut)."
After paying and leaving the shop, she didn't take the cake box I offered and walked ahead briskly; when I called out to her, she turned back with a smile.
"That was very educational, so let me teach you something too. You shouldn't proudly share stories you heard from your ex-girlfriend who was a pastry chef with a girl who might become your next girlfriend."
