How did you spend the Tanabata festival the other day?
Every year, some may have looked up at the cloudy night sky, imagining the frustration of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl themselves, unable to meet because of the unfortunate weather blocking the Milky Way right before their eyes.
*
Now that it is July, walking through the streets, it is a season where the signs of summer drift in strongly from somewhere.
To spend the hot and humid Japanese summer as comfortably and pleasantly as possible, in our home, we hang wind chimes by the window every year around this time.
The sound that rings out, 'chirin,' every time the wind passes through is like a small piece of magic that carries coolness to the ears.
*
Actually, although we simply call them wind chimes, did you know that the expression of their tone varies surprisingly depending on the material?
For example, the cool-looking glass Edo wind chimes.
When they sway gently in the wind, they ring with a lovely, fresh high-pitched sound, somewhat like a festival day.
Just hearing that light sound makes me feel nostalgic, as if I am remembering the blue sky I looked up at when I was a child.
*
On the other hand, wind chimes made of cast metal, such as Nambu ironware.
These have a completely different charm from glass. The long, lingering 'rin' sound is deep, somewhat solemn, and has a dignified resonance that seems to gently lower the temperature of the entire space.
There is a profound beauty to it that makes you want to listen carefully until the very last moment the sound fades away.
*
It is not that one is better than the other; it is very interesting how the sound that feels 'pleasant' changes depending on the air of the day and one's own state of mind.
Keeping that in mind, when I walk around town, it seems there are other households that have hung wind chimes besides ours, and I find myself enjoying a little detour in search of the cool scenery that leaks out from afar.

Amidst the busyness of daily life, the 'sounds that casually touch the ears' hidden in everyday life.
Reaching out to them and cherishing them gently.
That might be, for me, the most luxurious and relaxed way of living.
What kind of summer sounds are ringing around you right now?
During this difficult season, please stay healthy.
May today be a good day for you as well.
