I'll probably get hurt if the same thing happens again. That's why I won't ask.
"Mom, tomorrow is my birthday.
I want to spend it with you."
Shizuku, a high school girl played by Tao Tsuchiya,
said this with a trembling voice over her smartphone
to her mother, who was almost never home
because of work.
Even after more than 10 years since I saw the movie,
I still can't forget that scene.
It was a youth movie based on the manga
"My Little Monster."
In Shizuku's home, her mother is the breadwinner,
and her father stays home
and does the housework.
She is a girl who copes with the loneliness
of her mother not being home
by burying herself in her studies.
She gradually changes through her encounter
with the protagonist, Haru.
And then, the words she was finally able to say to her mother:
"Tomorrow is my birthday, so
I want to spend it with you."
(I don't remember the exact lines perfectly)
More than 10 years ago, I watched this scene
and cried my eyes out.
"It must have taken so much courage for Shizuku
to tell her mother that..."
I thought.
I was moved to tears by Shizuku's courage.
I think it must have been really, really scary
for Shizuku to tell her mother like that.
"It'll probably be a no anyway"
"The same thing will happen again
and I'll get hurt"
↓
"So I'll just stop"
I think I have often limited my own actions
with that kind of thought pattern.
Every time I remember that scene from the movie,
I gain the courage to overcome
my past experiences of being hurt.
I also talk about it in my YouTube video.
